Hi,
I have been tutoring kids after graduating college (it's been about 2 years). Is my job not impressive enough to get into HYS with 3.8 gpa and 170+ ? Cuz I heard softs are also important for T3.... I have not received any awards (Except academic honors) or done anything "big" during my undergrad. I just have a few internships in legal fields.
Is tutoring a bad job for HYS? Forum

Why these three schools?
For HLS it wouldn't matter if you had the numbers, but 3.8/170 won't cut it. You'll need 3.8/173 without softs to have a JS1 lock.
For YLS, if all you've done is go to college and private tutor, there's probably no combination of numbers that would make you a very compelling candidate. Especially if your GPA is 3.8 (on the low side). Same to a lesser degree for SLS. But you can't manufacture softs, and how well you write/your PS/your recs will also play some role here.

Don't discount the personal statement. Even if you feel like you're lacking in work/life experience, if you can spin what you HAVE done into an interesting story that sheds light onto your character, you can impress the admissions committee. Yale is a tough nut to crack regardless.

If that LSAT isn't hypothectical you will have good options depending on your goals (i.e lower T14 with $$$$).

You made ends meet for 2 years with just tutoring money?
As the others have said, you probably won't get into HYS because your numbers aren't high enough. Stats aside, the tutoring gig could be harmful or neutral depending on what you've done with it. Is it that you are extremely passionate about teaching, started your own tutoring company, and learned some valuable life lessons while helping students discover their own love of knowledge? Do you have a specific, heart-warming example of how you empowered a student to overcome a challenge and go on to accomplish something they never imagined was possible for them? Or did you just do tutoring as a part time job to keep the lights on instead of starting a career?
Many softs can be good or bad depending on the details and how you present them in your application / interviews (and your only job for two years would definitely come up in interviews).

3.8+/173+ does not make you a lock for a (pre-WL) JS1jbagelboy wrote:Why these three schools?
