Withdraw app or let deposit deadline pass

Post by Vandy2bforrealz » Tue Mar 22, 2016 6:11 pm

I'm no longer interested in a school due to a lowball offer they have not yet chosen to negotiate with. Should I withdraw my app with an email or just let the deposit deadline pass without a second thought?

Just send an email withdrawing your app. It opens up a spot for someone else and the sooner the better, right?

Some schools take a while to get back to you when negotiating. Practice some patience.

How many weeks must one practice patience until it is time to focus energies elsewhere?

Did they even acknowledge your email or did you send it and they went completely dark? If the latter, maybe you can follow up with an email or call, asking if they received your previous request.

I did receive an acknowledgement of my initial email within 24 hours. I checked on the status again ~2 weeks later and received a 2nd acknowledgement email almost immediately. It has been a solid month since the second inquiry.

If they told you that they aren't going to negotiate, and your decision is made, I would withdraw and open up the seat to another applicant.

If they told you "we'll get back to you" and haven't yet, I'd wait and let the deadline pass. If they ask why you didn't get back to them, you can ask why they didn't get back to you.

Just my $0.02.

Don't forget the out-the-door gambit. if you are planning on withdrawing anyway, try something like

"unfortunately I cannot consider X with the current financial aid package I've been offered, despite X being my favorite blah blah blah. Unless you are willing to increase my award I will be withdrawing my application on 1 April. Thank you."

Can't hurt, could work.
