Any thought on this breakup? The golden time to apply has officially ended?

While I am no expert, I don't think the "golden age" for applying is over. The fundamentals of the law school situation remain unchanged, which is for many, the prospect of lots of debt, limited job opportunities, and a 3 year investment of time which could go into building a different career. The costs are certainly high and the rewards are diminished for the high scorers (I am considering high scorers as above 165 here, or the approximate 90th percentile).

So yes, the previous 2014-2015 cycle may have been the steepest, recent bottom in terms of high LSAT scoring applicants, but it is by no means marking the end to a pattern. I would not be surprised if the next 5 or so years, barring substantial change to the law school situation, that there are a couple more lows and a couple more spikes upwards in terms of the LSAT quality of applicants.

I don't think it'll have much of an impact since schools have decreased their class sizes over the years. I think it just means that they can start accepting more people again.

I'm curious about this ... maybe somebody familiar with statistics can explain. I thought the LSAT was pretty carefully controlled/curved so that you would expect to see roughly the same percentage increase across for the board for score ranges. What might explain this? Is it maybe because, due to a rough job market, people with low scores are applying at lower rates?

I'm not so sure. Class size reductions were also a reaction to job market/placement realities. That was definitely the case at Michigan. I think that this news doesn't affect the conventional wisdom that if you want to touch the t-14 and have a competitive GPA, you should be aiming for a 170+. It's the lower scorers in the 165-169 band who should be most concerned about this development.

The tests are pre equated. So we just have better test takers applying this year. Probably due to better prep and more people being told to retake. Its not a traditional curve where we have to have a certain amount of people finish with certain numbers. Theoretically if only geniuses took the test next year we could have all 180s.

Doesn't matter too much. We're basically where we were the year before last, which was a historic low. Top scorers were down big time last year and rebounded back to where they were. Doesn't mean it's still not an awesome cycle to apply. I mean heck, we saw NYU dip below a 170 median last year.
