Deferral/Binding Deferral?

Post by MichiganMan87 » Wed Feb 24, 2016 11:03 pm

Hey all,

I'm having trouble finding information on deferrals and the repercussions for turning down an approved deferral at a later time and attending another school. Due to circumstances with my job, I'm unable to attend law school this fall and will attend in the fall of '17. Two schools have approved deferral requests from me. One (School A) asked me to simply reapply next cycle and annotate on my application that I was an approved deferral applicant. The other (School B) wants me to sign a piece of paper that will include my SSN. It does not mention that I am not allowed to apply or attend another school, but they ask for two seat deposits, one on April 1, 2016 and one in March 2017.

Would I be in any hot water if I signed the latter piece of paper and paid the deposit while continuing to show interest in the other school? Could I reapply to other schools next cycle if I paid the deposit? I'm not sure what the ramifications, if any, this would bring for the C&F portion of the BAR Exam. My wife and I are trying to keep options open since she has a great job, and attending the school requesting the deposit would not require us to move and for her to switch jobs. School A is a Tier 1, School B is a Tier 2 on the cusp of Tier 1. Both are free with GI bill benefits and scholarships. Thoughts?
