Debt Worth It?

Post by PSPSPSPS » Wed Feb 24, 2016 1:12 pm

Is it worth it having 40k of debt from OSU?

I want to work in Ohio.
Employment numbers are relatively good for Ohio.
I don't feel like 40-50k of debt is horrible, especially since I have none from undergrad.

Thanks

I've seen it written many times that you shouldn't borrow in aggregate more than your first year's salary. I haven't done the math behind it, but as a rule of thumb, it sounds good enough to me. So, I'd just figure out what the typical salary is for the type of job you can likely get from OSU and see how much it pays. If it pays more than $40k, go for it. If not, then maybe it's not worth it.

It's 40k + 3 years of foregone income/lost opportunity to build a different career. Neither the debt nor the opportunity cost is worth it if you don't really want to be a lawyer.

No idea if its worth it or not, but remember to account for interest, tuition hikes, and loan fees when reaching that number. I was in the same boat as you and the final amount owed is looking to be about 10k higher with that all factored in.

Just try to go in with the most clear picture you can.

I don't think $40k total (I'm assuming you mean over 3 years, not per year and are including taking into account cost of living and whatnot, not just tuition) is a bad deal at all considering you want to work in Ohio. It's certainly the best school in the state and will place well in the state.
