Should I use up my 3rd LSAT?

Post by texasrangersjb » Wed Feb 17, 2016 11:50 am

I took the June and October 2015 LSATs. Highest was a 165 and GPA is 3.43.

I got into a top 50 local school, but not the #1 school in my state (UT Austin).

I am ok with going to this local school, but I also feel like I left some LSAT points on the table.

I will be 26 soon and want to get this law school thing started but at the same time, I want to study at the best school possible.

What are the pros/cons of retaking in June?

I assuming you're going to UH/SMU

I was in your exact same situation (numbers were a little different-higher GPA and lower LSAT). But I had committed to UH, retook in June, scored higher and withdrew, applied to UT the next cycle and got in. I'm a 3L at UT now. Without a doubt, my employment prospects were greatly improved by attending UT.

You have everything to gain and nothing to lose by retaking in June.

Was actually gonna comment on your post in UT thread.

You should def retake. I was in a similar position as you but during last cycle (similar lsat+gpa). I was looking at mylsn and realized that 167/168 was almost a lock for UT. I retook and got over the 167/168 threshold, and am now looking at my pick of mid T14-down. You can seat deposit now, retake in June, get your score back and reassess. If you stay the same, you can keep on your current course. If you improve, you can reevaluate your chances and know that you used up your takes when you reapply.

Thanks ya'll. Wow that is exactly my situation Zuck. Appreciate the wisdom. Has UT been what you expected? What have you liked about it?

Yeah, it has been great. Mostly I love living in Austin, it's my favorite city in the U.S. But UT specifically has been good, professors are overall quite good and many are prominent in their field (for example, learning from people who have helped draft the Texas rules of Evidence, Civil Procedure, the estates code, etc. is neat), the staff is generally friendly and helpful, and the students are mostly cool/not gunnery. The building isn't the greatest but that's not a huge deal. Overall UT has been great for me, I can't complain.

The biggest thing though is how much better my employment prospects have been. UH/SMU are fine schools but there is a sizeable difference in terms of employment possibilities (as there is between UT and a T14). I can't emphasize enough how glad I am that I retook and went to UT instead of UH. I don't think I would have received the job offer I did if I went to UH, and by retaking the LSAT I'm actually in less debt at UT than I would have been at UH. There really is all upside and no downside when it comes to retaking the LSAT.
