Re: Do law schools ask for verification of competing scholarship offers?

Why not ask for an extension from the expiring offer? You can't pretend an expired offer is still on the table if it's been revoked.I don't think an expired offer would have any leverage at all, but I haven't tried it. Schools will verify. I remember a few years ago someone got in trouble for lying about a scholarship while trying to negotiate. They got reported to LSAC.

I think the uber cutesy Dean Z from Michigan might have blogged about that incident but I'm not sure it was her. It's a really vague memory.

Edit: Turns out I have a pretty damn good memory. This is from 2010 but still applies:

Bad timing for you. Doesnt look like you can assume schools don't check. Maybe ask some other people in the negotiating scholarships work thread.

Yeah, don't lie to schools during the process. That shit could backfire hard if you get caught.

Remember you're dealing with a law school here and I've found in my prior dealings with them that they are pretty keen on verification and documentation. Don't play around with integrity issues when dealing with law school...it's not the token phrase it might be in b-school (MBA here).

I have to admit I am struggling a little bit to understand your decision issue here. To even have a chance at the scholarship, you are going to have to pay the $2k to the b-school to keep the scholarship offer valid. If you get the full scholarship to law school, I assume you want to go there and will have to eat the $2k. If you don't get the full scholarship from the law school, you're going to take the scholarship to the b-school, which requires you to pay the $2k. Either way, you're paying $2k.

But I'm also confused because you said you had an offer from a peer school? How exactly does that work between a b-school and a law school?

Gotcha. Thanks for the clarification. I definitely think if you can survive the potential incineration of $2k, pay the deposit and keep everything above board.
