Will LSAC hurt me?

Post by Sparkymilarky » Thu Jan 28, 2016 6:26 am

I'm retaking a few undergrad courses from first year, I'm aware that LSAC counts any credit grade that appears on the transcript but my university clearly writes 'Repeated - NO CREDIT' next to the original grade on transcript . My original grades are Cs and I'm retaking for As

As my college does not consider original as credit, am I in luck?

Looks like your schools saved you. From LSAC:
Passing grades from systems of one or two passing grades (e.g., Pass/Fail, Satisfactory/Unsatisfactory, Credit/No Credit, or Honors/Pass/Fail, High Pass/Pass/Fail, and those for which conversion rules cannot be formulated, including courses for which a transcript gives only narratives or descriptions. Credits for the work in these courses are totaled and reported separately as unconverted credits. The only exception to this policy is for a reported grade below C-minus from a two-passing-grade grading system (e.g., Credit/D/Fail) when the issuing institution includes this grade in their calculation of a GPA.

The original grade for a repeated course when the transcript does not show both the grade and the units for the original attempt. The total number of credits assigned to these grades will appear on the applicant's academic summary, but will not be included in the GPA calculation.

You may just need to send it in and see what LSAC does. Your school says "repeated - no credit," but you said that was next to the original grade? That second LSAC paragraph sounds like if the original grade is on the transcript, it does count.

That's detailing grades EXCLUDED. I've sent them an email.

Wish me luck

But LSAC weights each grade according to the number of credit hours, maybe in theory they'll count it but when it gets factored in as zero credit hours it won't have any effect.

Would that depend on whether the original number of attempted credit hours is also on the transcript?

My understanding was that the transcript shows zero, but I didn't realize that it could show the hours and just say next to it (zero credit). In which case, I don't know how LSAC handles that.

To be honest, I'm just not sure from the OP what info actually is still on the transcript. Putting "Repeated - NO CREDIT" next to the original grade makes it sound like the original grade and credit hours could still be on there, which seems to be a different situation from listing only the course name and none of the rest of the info from the first attempt.

Here is the policy

A course attempt having a passing grade may be repeated only once. A course attempt having a failing grade may be repeated only twice. Further course repeats may only be authorized by the Dean of the Faculty in which the student is registered. Grades (including failures) for all course attempts will appear on the transcript and will be included in the accumulation of course attempts and maximum failures allowed. All but the most recent course attempt will appear on the transcript as Repeated, No Credit and will be excluded from cumulative average calculations used for progression requirements

I think the question is does the grade appear? Have you seen a copy of your transcript/seen a friend's who has this circumstance?

If the grade does not appear, it seems whatever school this is allows students to repeat any course that hurts their GPA. I'm super jealous if that's the case.

The OP already said that the original grade appears on the transcript, though. Again, LSAC will make the final determination, but it sounds more like the typical situation where a school doesn't count the earlier attempts but LSAC does.

LSAC counts the C+ in my English class that I took as a senior in HS through a community college, correct?

Yup
I had 3 community college classes from high school ... all counted (luckily, in my case)

The academic councilors said it would be strange for them to factor in a NO CREDIT grade. But I'm going to contact lsac about it for clarification

Why are their policies do harsh? There's some real horror stories out there about lsac
