Admissions Question

Post by PSPSPSPS » Fri Jan 15, 2016 12:39 am

I think it is clear that I was waitlisted for yield protect at school X. I am above both 75ths at school X, and was accepted into multiple schools ranked higher, even, and lower. This was my only waitlist or denial of the cycle. However, it was one of my top choices. My question is if I can call the director of admissions and ask why I was placed on the waitlist / if they would consider re examining my application. I was expecting significant money from here according to LSN and I know that schools are not supposed to engage in this practice. Thanks.

You've already been rejected. I don't see what it can hurt?

Schools aren't supposed to yield protect? According to who?

I wouldn't call, I would write a letter of continued interest like every other waitlisted person. A phone call would almost certainly sound entitled. Just write an email explaining why you want to go to the school.

Why would the school flat-out reject you instead of putting you in the WL if this really was a case of YP? Numbers don't guarantee admissions, maybe you really did screw up big time somewhere in the application, who knows?

But I do agree that you should email them and ask what the reason for the rejection was just so you get a peace of mind.

No, he WAS waitlisted, not outright rejected.

OP - if there's any reasonable chance that you would actually go with School X if they end up accepting you off the WL, then I'd write a LOCI. If not (and it sounds like you've had a very good cycle), then I'd just write it off. There's not enough tact and charm in the world for you to call/email them and ask why you were waitlisted without rubbing the adcomms the wrong way.

I agree with writing LOCI instead of calling. Just write a convincing LOCI that explains why the school is your top choice. If you convince them that they are actually your top choice, then there would be no reason to reject for yield protect.

Numbers do not guarantee admission, nor do the decisions of other schools. The only thing to do is tell the school whether you are interested.
