Considering Taking Barbri Bar-Prep BEFORE Law School

Post by papakho7 » Sun Jan 10, 2016 12:49 am

I'm considering taking the Barbri Bar-Prep before my first year of law school. My LSAT Tutors think that it would help make my first year a lot easier. Has anyone done this before and/or know of results from doing so?

Nope. I took it and I found it to be utterly useless.

Two of my close friends took it too and share the same sentiment.

Is your LSAT tutor a Testmasters instructor? You have another thread on here saying that your instructor is recommending a Testmasters "Platinum Tutoring" package. Is the same instructor recommending both of these (very expensive) things--a $8750 - $6750 Platinum Tutoring package and a $1,100 law school prep course?

I highly recommend against doing this. The bar prep courses presume that you have a foundation of knowledge from your 1L courses. Signing up for a bar prep course BEFORE you start law school is a gunner move. Don't be that guy. Instead, I recommend focusing on your LSATs and working your hardest to get into the best law school possible.

Once you begin 1L year, BarBri offers pre-enrollment opportunities which are beneficial to learning the subject matter. I think its like $20/$40 to enroll and "lock in" the tuition rate for the bar. This grants you access to online lectures and outlines that are geared entirely towards your 1L course. The lectures are usually between 4-6 hours, and serve as a good review tool as you approach the end of finals. Kaplan provides the same benefit, except it was free my 1L year.

Wouldn't help at all. A bar course will cover a ton of canned law at a very high level, without any of the nuance or policy analysis your professors will expect. A typical Torts course might cover half of what the bar tests, but in much greater depth. Bar essays are also quite different from law school exams, so you'll learn very few transferable skills. Terrible idea.
