Hello, TLSers. Question regarding softs. I have read many threads on this topic, but had to post just for my own peace of mind, I hope you understand.
I’m currently in a difficult situation. I applied for and was awarded a great opportunity through my school, which would allow me to intern in DC over the summer. I was really excited about this experience, especially because I felt it would really help me in the admissions process since as of right now I have virtually no softs. I was looking forward to applying for and securing an internship over winter break, but my personal life and financial situation took a bit of turn a few weeks ago.
Bit of a back story: I’m a first gen, going into college blind and with very high goals for myself, my family and I decided I would not work through college, and would instead focus on academics. While in college, my mother has been supporting me financially. Sadly, she just lost her job, which means we have no money coming in. Going to DC was going to be a stretch anyway coming from a poor family, but it was doable. Now it’s not looking like it may not be. I will need to instead stay here and work to help my family make it through this (and sadly, probably not meaningful work).
I am devastated that I will not get to take advantage of this opportunity, but I’m wondering how much it really matters in terms of law school application and admission. Especially considering the internship would probably not be anything too special - probably interning with my state senator or something. Everything I’ve read on TLS stresses numbers (which is good for me), but does this still apply for someone with virtually no softs who is hoping to get into a great school like Texas?
This summer I also planned to study for the LSAT, so I suppose it’s good I will be able to focus on that more. I just worry I will be shooting myself in the foot if I miss this opportunity.
Any advice? Thanks in advance - this has been a very stressful situation so any input would be so helpful.

It literally doesn't matter. If anything working full-time is prob a better soft than a few month internship. Good luck with your situation, don't worry about this at all!

Not only are you going to be fine, this will be an excellent topic for a diversity essay. DC internships are a dime a dozen, they don't add too much to an application. I'm sorry you're missing out on something you looked forward to, though. That sounds difficult. Make sure you check with your school to see if they have financial aid available, in case that would still work for you.
