WUSTL ED vs. Other Schools?

Post by FredTheFish » Sat Dec 12, 2015 3:30 pm

Long time lurker, first time poster. I'm now in the swing of law school applications and was looking for some solid advice.

Numbers: 165/3.50 Double major (one hard science, one liberal art)

Career Goals:
I have no preference where I work. West coast/Texas would be nice, and I'd obviously like to avoid places like the Dakotas, but I grew up in the Northeast and love it, enjoy the South, went to undergrad in the Midwest and like it, so it doesn't really matter.
I'm going to bust my ass for Biglaw or a federal clerkship, but it's not a huge deal for my goals if I don't get either (depending on debt situation of course). The goal would be Biglaw for a few years, and transition into Environmental Law at a smaller firm. If no Biglaw, then I would go straight for Environmental Law. If that doesn't work out, I actually do enjoy personal injury (even though everyone thinks it's shit law on here). I also wouldn't mind patent law but my undergrad degree isn't exactly desirable for this field, but maybe after working in the field for a few years that can change.

I am very debt averse.

Ties:
Strong ties in PA, weak ties in the rest of the Northeast. Strong ties in OH, weak ties in the rest of the Midwest. Strong ties in Texas. I'm good at networking, so living in a city of my choice this upcoming summer can pay dividends for developing more ties.

School List:
Not applying to all of these, but it would be ND, BC, BU, GWU, Vandy, Cornell, WUSTL, UMich, UWash, UCDavis and Irvine, USC, Villanova, Temple, OSU, and Emory.
This is the real dilemma. My numbers put me at ~$60,000 scholarship to ND, BC, BU, GWU, which are my favorites of the schools I have a realistic shot of getting into. Best shot at the T14/UCLA/UT/Vandy would be a few waitlists but I'm not holding my breath. This is why WUSTL ED with its full-tuition scholarship has crept onto my radar. I wouldn't consider my numbers a strong candidate for WUSTL to necessarily accept me ED, but it seems like their ED program isn't nearly as competitive as others around the nation. And even if I'm not a guarantee for their program, it is still quite a decision to apply to it considering its binding nature.

Before anyone suggests retaking, I did and ended up cancelling my score (I was sick). Doubt I would do much better than 165 anyways.
