waitlisting and accepted in same letter

Post by Troianii » Tue Dec 08, 2015 2:54 am

I was recently waitlisting at a target school which in the same letter said they'd accept me for the spring semester. I'd of course rather not wait, but I'm just curious how common thus is. Seems an odd practice, but makes sense - I assume they're thinking about protecting the medians.

It's fairly common. Most schools that split up their classes like this only have certain section sizes for each entering class so I imagine they're "full" (or as full as they want to be) for that semester, but are fine with putting you off until the next one.

It is a bit of gamesmanship with regards to medians. It used to be much worse, I think, before the ABA "clarified" that schools should count stats for ALL students who enter in a given year, not just the ones in the fall. Since the year runs October 2015-October 2016 (i.e. Spring 16, Summer 16, and Fall 16 starts), putting you into Spring 2017 would let them "punt" your numbers into the next cycle.

Well I guess that's fair haha. At any rate, thanks for the response.

OK, I didn't know the rules changed to fix that. Thanks for the response!
