ED?
Any ideas if ED can be a smart move? I'm a 3.57 w/ 2 years work experience, 173 lsat. I just submitted some applications and realized that my personal statement isn't really that strong. My work experience and rec letters are pretty good, though.
I would really like to attend CLS, but there seems to be a lot of really limited/skewed data out there.. I've heard the whole risk of paying sticker thing, but with my numbers I am doubting much chance of a scholly to a place like CLS, if even admitted.

CLS doesn't give a boost for ED applicants. You might get in with your current numbers.

It looks like you would be a safe bet for NU's ED. While NU is certainly not CLS, their ED comes with a guaranteed $150,000 scholarship. This makes NU a very nice option if you're debt averse as NU still affords its students solid employment outcomes.
If you don't want to limit your options, don't apply ED anywhere. A 173, even when coupled with a 3.57, will most likely give you solid offers at most of the lower T-14 with substantial scholarship money.

Yea I guess my big concern was that its about 50/50 with my numbers, and with a mediocre personal statement those chances probably dropped decently.. then again maybe I'm overstating the weight of a PSBiglaw1990 wrote:CLS doesn't give a boost for ED applicants. To the above I was considering it but not really that excited about Chicago for 3 years

Chicago has some of the best months out of any city in the world. I firmly believe that. In Chicago, you just have to pay for it with absolutely abhorrent months.sglassman wrote:To the above I was considering it but not really that excited about Chicago for 3 years
I'd give it a look. It has a great option for EDing. Your WE will be looked upon favorable. NU is in one of the best parts of the city, too. It's got a beautiful campus right on the lake. From the law school you can see the fire works at Navy Pier.

Would you turn down Yale because of New Haven?sglassman wrote:Yea I guess my big concern was that its about 50/50 with my numbers, and with a mediocre personal statement those chances probably dropped decently.. then again maybe I'm overstating the weight of a PSBiglaw1990 wrote:CLS doesn't give a boost for ED applicants. Look, I totally get wanting to spend 3 years in a place you are excited about. Even as a Midwesterner, Chicago would not be my first, second, third, fourth, or fifth choice. But not liking the city in my opinion is not the best reason to throw out what could potentially be one of your best options.
Did I come to WUSTL for the excitement of St. Louis? Sure as hell not. But it doesn't matter. All I do is drive to and from campus and my apartment and occasionally get dinner and drinks with my friends or go to a Cardinals game. 1L is generally busy enough to where it's difficult to enjoy the city you're in.
That being said Chicago weather is absolutely egregious, if that's more of what you were considering.
Not trying to persuade you one way or another but I wouldn't immediately discard NU ED just because OMG CHICAGO

Yea but at the end of the day the deadline is in ten days, and I'm not going to commit three years of my life to a city I don't know in that short amount of time. Plus I have a girlfriend in DC so the East Coast is a major attraction. I'm all about getting the best education you can, but if I have to choose between a good school and her it's going to be her every time.acr wrote:sglassman wrote:Not trying to persuade you one way or another but I wouldn't immediately discard NU ED just because OMG CHICAGOBiglaw1990 wrote:CLS doesn't give a boost for ED applicants. I guess when you distill my initial post, my question is really if the no ED boost at Columbia is actually true given the sample size. Idk to me it seems like a lot of people like saying that without much evidence and with a very small sample selection. It seems illogical that a school would not look favorably at someone committing to them in advance.
My other question would be if a personal statement has much weight and should be something to worry about. Doesn't seem to be much information on that either...
