How bad is it.... please give me some advice

Post by zissou » Wed Nov 04, 2015 9:47 pm

So I took the LSAT three times. My scores were 161, 160, and 167. I've submitted applications to three schools already, but didn't think to add an addendum regarding the scores. Frankly, I had not fully grasped the material the first time, and had bad anxiety on test day the second time, neither of which seemed like a good excuse. Turns out two of the schools encourage addendum for large score differences and now I'm reading that with thee scores I should at least try to explain, credit new studying techniques, etc.

I'm worried I've torpedoed my chances with these schools, which were reaches at the top of my list. How badly have I hurt myself? Should I try to contact the schools and ask if I can send them an addendum?

You're in luck. You probably haven't hurt yourself at all. Your gap in scores isn't that crazy, just looks like you studied more for that 3rd take. No big deal.

This can't hurt you that badly. First, most schools only really care about your highest score because that's all they have to report to USNWR. You will be viewed as a 167 candidate, even if you don't have a great explanation for how you got there. Second, not really understanding the material and then studying more is not really an explanation that requires an addendum. Like you pointed out yourself, it's not really the best excuse, and it's something they'll probably assume anyway.

Don't try to contact the schools now; that will just make your application seem sloppier / less thorough and thought-out. What you sent in should be perfectly fine without any explanation, so you don't need to worry.

I took the test 3 times, had a jump like that, didn't write an addendum. Schools didn't care.
