171, no GPA, ED NYU or CLS?
Hey guys,
Got 171 in this June's test, only score. Regular softs, undergraduate from top 1 University in non-U.S. country. My undergraduate transcript is evaluated by LSAC to be Above Average (best rating is Superior), close to 90/100 in numbers. Worked for a Vault 10 law firm for over 10 months after graduation last June. But my PS is irrelevant to that work experience and more of public interest litigation.
Since it's generally hard for students without a GPA to get into top law schools, although my lsat is 75% for NYU and median for CLS (2018 stats), I am not sure whether I could get into either of the two schools. ED might slightly increase the odds...
As the ED deadlines are approaching, I am really twisted between ED for NYU or CLS. I love both schools and apparently chances for NYU are better than CLS. Should I ED CLS (running the risk of getting rejected early and losing the ED chance for NYU) or simply ED NYU?
Thanks a lot!

In addition to above, neither NYU or Columbia really give a boost for ED

The ED program of NU is definitely appealing, but $ is not my primary concern. Just want to get into either of the two schools. Which one would you say?benwyatt wrote:You shouldn't ED anywhere except NU unless you have $300K sitting around.

Okay, thx! In that case, should I apply to the one I want to get in most or the one with better chances not to be rejected in ED?Mack.Hambleton wrote:In addition to above, neither NYU or Columbia really give a boost for ED

you don't know enough to game this, so just apply ED to the school you want to go to the most.
(none of us know enough to game this. admissions is really complicated.)

Similar boat. From what I've gathered, if you are at or above target school's LSAT median, just throw the application fee (or ask for waiver) with finger crossed.
Edit: FWIW, I have an LSAT a hair higher than you and applied to CLS RD.

I have really average softs, so I guess ED is slightly safer. Good luck!ihenry wrote:Similar boat. From what I've gathered, if you are at or above target school's LSAT median, just throw the application fee (or ask for waiver) with finger crossed.

Huh? With a uGPA, which normally means you went to a U.S. undergrad, you should probably go to mylsn.info to check for your chances. OP (and me) are "foreign-educated" applicants and essentially only have LSAT + soft bundle (undergrad grades are more like a soft here), which makes our game like a crapshoot.kepfd24 wrote:slightly safer meaning better chance?ihenry wrote:Yeah me too, so I am planning to gain some WE if I don't get in..susanlata wrote:I have really average softs, so I guess ED is slightly safer. If you have a US GPA, you should use predictors to see admission stats in previous years. As I could recall, your gpa might be below their median. Some posts above replied that ED does not give any boost in NYU&CLS case. With our numbers, it's very lucky to get admitted lol... and let's not think about $$ now. From what I know, CLS's Hamilton Scholarship (full-amount) will be automatically granted to selected admitted students with 176+ LSAT and 3.7+ GPA.kepfd24 wrote:I am in a similar boat.
LSAT 171, gpa 3.58 - 3.64 (not yet solidified). UG double major, 4 years living/WE abroad, fluent in that language, and Columbia has a strong program for this language.
I want to go to Columbia. Call me crazy, but I think/pretty sure I would go there over a small-middle sized scholarship from another top school (but not HYS).
Do you think ED can give me that extra boost? I think last year people with my numbers had a positive outcome because of relatively fewer amount of +170 scores, but from what I am gathering this year, +170 scores are going to be more in number.
If admitted, Columbia wouldn't dish out any small $, correct?

WLs can be tricky. I don't know much about that either. Good luck to all of us!kepfd24 wrote:Thanks a lot for your reply. Three applicants last year between a 3.5 and 3.6 with a 171, one denied, one waitlisted then rejected, one waitlisted then accepted. I think the one that was accepted was not "lucky" at all. I guess I was looking for insight into what could give an applicant with my numbers that tiny extra push.
And no, I was not thinking about $$, it was simply a question seeking confirmation, hence why it was phrased in the negative.
