Family Law

Post by Tiny123 » Sun Oct 18, 2015 12:24 am

I saw some old posts from 2012 saying you are not going to get any family law gig from OCI, is that true?

Love family law, but i can only work for big law due to work visa issue.

If big law do hires family lawyers, which are the good programs for it?

Thank you so much for everyone that replied so far, there is another question, if family law is out of question for the moment, which area should I study? Litigation perhaps? If I want to eventually work as a family lawyer.

I've never heard of a firm doing family law. There's not enough money to justify it for the firm, or billable work to justify it to a client.

Sorry.

Please watch less Chinese TV dramas like Li Hun Lv Shi or Ai Qing Gong Yu.

("Divorce Lawyer" and "Love Apartment")

I live in a major US city and there are several large and well-known (sometimes not for good reasons) family law firms in town. I think a large city can support several of these, and the rest are smaller law offices that focus primarily on family law, along with a plethora of solo practitioners. If you are in a major US city, people have money, especially cities that are gathering millionaires by the fistful right now, and those people have lots of money for family law issues.

I wated like one episode for each show, and it has nothing to do with why I want to become a family lawyer.

I know there are some mid size firm in Chicago just for family law, they all have around 40-60 lawyers, but none is them is doing any OCI and thy also don't have summer programs, which is weried to me.

I mean, for the sake of work permit, we should be practical when seeking employment. If for any reason you want to be a family lawyer but can't land such gig, you probably want to compromise.

(And I watched 0 and 0.5 respectively and you already know more than me LOL)

I think SemperLegal probably meant biglaw. There are lots of family law firms, but generally, biglaw represents businesses, not individuals. I think the exception might be that some biglaw firms do trusts and estates? That would involve some part of family law, or at least, for rich families. Obviously lots of rich people get divorced and hire lawyers to do so, so there can be a lot of money in it, but again, these are not generally biglaw lawyers.

OP, I don't know if any of those other firms would be able to sponsor a visa - I think it would be very much on a case by case basis. They probably don't do OCI/summer programs because they only hire on an as-needed basis; OCI requires firms to figure out what their employment needs will be basically 2 years ahead of time. Smaller firms tend to hire when they need someone.

What are the areas of law students usually got hired during OCI?
