Fee Waiver question

Post by Judgeasaurus_Rex » Mon Sep 28, 2015 8:21 pm

Is it ok to ask a school for a fee waiver if they had previously sent you a fee waiver during a previous years application cycle?

I received a few late last cycle (Jan-March), but I did not end up applying last year. I feel as if these fee waivers may have been sent out to help schools attract more applicants in order to boost their rankings in the US & world News report!

Is it worth it to ask for a fee waiver form them?

At no cost to you, I'd think it's worth it. The worst they can say is "no", which doesn't make your app cost any more than it would have otherwise.

I assume so. I've pretty much done it. I'm a senior this year and took the LSAT in June, and got fee waivers for last year's cycle from a lot of schools, some of which were top 100s. I asked at least one of them, Oklahoma (#67 by USNEWS) if they'd extend it for the following application cycle, and they said yes. There were a couple others I asked to do the same, basically TTT, and they all said yes. But most of the decent schools, such as William and Mary, didn't send me a waiver until September.

And I'd just think of it like this - if they wanted you to apply then, they'll probably want you to apply now. It couldn't hurt to ask, and they're usually pretty open about it, in my experience at least. For example, a lot of law schools offer fee waivers to vets and so I sent an email asking some for fee waivers, and sent the email to some schools which actually don't - and some of them seem to have said "wtf, why not" and given one anyways. So if you have a fair reason to ask for one, and yours is damned good, go ahead.

You don't have to have a fair reason to ask for one. If you want one for merit, you literally just send them your numbers and ask for one. If for another reason, you say that in the email. It doesn't have to be a fair reason or even a damned good reason. OP, just ask. Like I said, the worst they can say is no. And if they say no, your application fee isn't going to increase any more than it would have.
