How many academic LORs should I have?

Post by corgiterrier17 » Wed Sep 23, 2015 2:00 pm

I am applying to Harvard, which requires 2 but also accepts up to 3 LORs..
I think I can only get one good/great academic LOR...so I was going to get one from my employer.
But someone said it's best to get all the LORs from professors...
I could ask another professor for a LOR but honestly, I am not that close to her and it's sort of awkward to ask her for a LOR.
Should I still get two LORs from professors?

Thanks!

Schools generally prefer academic LORs because it's more of an indicator of how you will behave in the same setting. I'd, at a minimum, get at least one academic and maybe 2 (with your third being the employer). I did 2 academic and 1 from my employer just because I was KJD and wanted to show I had the maturity to succeed in a work environment (albeit in a limited, part-time setting).

In regards to letters of recommendation, it is always wise to acquire at least one academic letter. If you have an employer who you believe will write you a solid letter, as opposed to another professor, that will be sufficient as well.

You may always call the admission’s department, explain your situation, and see which they suggest or prefer.

Best of luck!
