Guaranteed Job after graduation

Post by Lawdog23 » Wed Aug 26, 2015 6:38 pm

After weeks of looking around the forum, I wanted to bring up my situation that I haven't seen very often. I'm a senior in undergrad looking to attend law school after graduation. I have a 3.95 GPA, and have yet to take the LSAT. I was pre-med throughout the first few years of undergrad and kept my grades as high as possible for that route. My situation is unique due to the fact that I have a guaranteed job ( a close family member w/ a solo practice) upon graduation.

I'd ideally want to attend Memphis (where close family member attended law school and also the city wife will be in.) I don't have a burning desire to attend a T14 or T30 school due to my job security upon graduation.

Has anyone else been in or seen a similar situation? Should I aim for the most scholarship $ possible? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

If you actually want that job then just go to the cheapest school possible

I would most defiantly want the job. Ideally working with and taking over the practice when the close family member retires. Thanks for the reply.

Yeah then I'd just work to get a full ride at Memphis

If you go on www.lawschoolnumbers.com you might be able to find the profiles of people who got full rides there (assuming they even give some out, not all schools do)

I was looking at this site earlier this week. The $$$ column on the schools applicants tab is the money awarded I'm assuming? Thanks for the information!

Yeah that's typically the merit scholarship amount

Sometimes it can be tough to figure out if they are reporting the per year amount, or the total award (meaning per year amount multiplied by 3). It can also get tricky with public schools if the person is out of state and getting some sort of in state tuition equalizer along with a merit scholarship. But it should give you a general idea.

Also sometimes some schools are pretty transparent and if you call them up, tell them your GPA, and ask what lsat score you need for a full ride they will tell you.

I understand that makes sense. Thank you for all the useful info! With a 3.95+ GPA and studying for the LSAT, hopefully a full ride to Memphis is obtainable. I will be contacting Memphis about this.

Any other input is appreciated!

+1 to everything zuck said. I'd personally try to shadow/intern for your family member for a bit though to really see if this is what you want. If it turns out not to be what you want, Memphis even with a full ride will really limit what else you can do.

I don't think the advice here has been great. Take the lsat and study really hard. You could potentially get a full ride to some of the best schools in the nation except HYS (they don't offer merit scholarships). Would you really turn down a full ride to Chicago over a full ride to Memphis? You'll be able to go to this firm no matter where you attend school, so you should go to the best school that gives you a full ride. You would do your future self a huge disservice by going to school in Memphis.

If you can score well enough on the lsat to get a full ride to vanderbilt then why not do that?

I think you're wrong and you should feel wrong. The advice has been spectacular.

The key is my first post. If he wants the job and he has a spouse living in Memphis that he doesn't want to relocate then he should go to Memphis on a fully.

But chuck's post is also important to keep in mind.

No worries, for my degree I will be completing a 300+ hour internship as a requirement to graduate, so I will have plenty of exposure to ensure this is right for me.

Floridacostalorbust, you also make a valid point. The main sticking point to Memphis would be a spouse that couldn’t relocate to another city such as Nashville. Spouse will be enrolled in optometry school in Memphis.
