GPA slightly below median
Say a law school's median GPA is 3.79 and I had a 3.78 or 3.77. Would this hurt my chances, or would the school consider my GPA equivalent to their median? Does the answer vary by school?

It would be below the median because it's not a 3.79. It is below a 3.79.

Yeah definitely below median, but I think the obsession with percentiles is a bit overplayed on TLS. You would have to have something to address being below the median by a few hundredths, but that would be pretty easy. A point for the LSAT median for example or impressive difficulty for your UG coursework. On the basis of GPA alone, you should be fine.

Right, I was just wondering if the difference was so small that it wouldn't make a difference.KMart wrote:It would be below the median because it's not a 3.79. It is below a 3.79.

Re: GPA slightly below median
As mentioned, you would be below their median.
But that's last year's median. Don't forget that schools re-do this process every single year and, despite doing their best, have largely not been able to maintain medians over the past few years. Most set targets and do rolling admissions with the goal of keeping the medians as high as possible in light of their revenue needs and other goals like diversity.
so, for example, a 3.77 applying to somewhere with a previous year median of 3.79 could be right on the school's new target as the year progresses. Just apply and see. There's nothing else you can really do.
P.S. obviously raise your GPA if at all possible before graduating a bachelor's degree program.

Medians fluctuate year to year. Get your LSAT above median and you'll be fine.

Re: GPA slightly below median
Not worth obsessing over, but as others have mentioned, the admissions committee will be looking at your GPA in relation to the applicant pool they have this year. Exactly where it is relative to last year's numbers doesn't matter on its own - it just gives you an idea of what they will be looking at this year.

Schools care MUCH more about LSAT median. You'll be fine
