How much does college athletics help in an addendum for a lower GPA?

Post by kkrunner » Fri Jul 03, 2015 7:02 pm

Hey guys,

I was a 4-year scholarship athlete for an ACC school ranked in the top 20, and I have a 163 LSAT and 3.05 gpa. Had a really rough transition into college in regards to time management and balancing things, but there is a solid upward trend. In addition, I was a microbiology major, and I have a year of undergraduate research experience and will also have a year of work experience doing clinical research before starting. I'm definitely planning on retaking the LSAT in October, but do y'all think I might have a good enough argument to get a few bites from higher ranking schools?

Tell us more about your clinical research gig. Do you like it? Is it giving you a decent income with potential for advancement in the field. Law school may not be for you. Why is law school enticing?

With that being said, an upward trend is something you definitely want to point out, if it is significant, and of course, the rigor of college athletics plays into that.

It won't do much at all tbh.

I like it enough, and it does pay decent for a starting position, but I just can't picture myself working in a lab the rest of my life. In addition, there is some potential for advancement, but the ceiling for pay in the field with only a bachelors degree is not spectacular.

In addition, i'm interested in patent law, but I know it's a bit harder to get your foot in the door without a PHD. However, health care law is also of interest. Also, i'm a very good writer and public speaker, so I feel that this combined with my unique background may lead to some opportunities.

I appreciate your honesty! I think you're right about it having little effect in getting into a T14 school unless I can drastically improve on the LSAT, but i'm hoping it may get me over the hump with a few T30 schools

It really won't. And getting over the hump at a T30 isn't good either, because that sounds like sticker, and also T30 isn't a thing. Paying 200k to go to Alabama isn't a good outcome.
