What would your career goals be? Where do you want to work?

what is your current occupation? Is a JD the only other post-grad degree you father is willing to pay for?

biglaw isn't really cut throat or aggressive. it's also not much like being a lawyer.

I mean, if your dad truly won't bat an eye at spending $250k, then go to the best school possible.
You don't seem particularly dedicated to law though. So maybe do a bit more soul searching before you decide to dedicate three years of schooling and a ton of your dad's money to this path.
Also, please define "significantly higher." What's your PT average?

At this point it seems like he would only pay for a JD because he firmly believes that I would have the best chance of excelling in law school as opposed to medical school or something similar. He would pay for an MBA but I have no business background and I am bad at math and econ. I don't think he would strongly support some random masters degree because there isn't anything I'm particularly drawn to and it would be more limiting if I end up wanting to pursue a different career in the future.pulstar1 wrote:what is your current occupation? Dealing with parental pressure is very tricky. My parents were the same way when I graduated college last year. It's definitely a good move to take some time off and experience the real world for a bit. Law school isn't going anywhere.Bravo wrote:I'm in my last year of undergrad. I considered taking off time and working but my social sciences major doesn't really set me up for any great positions and I don't need to save up money for law school. I have already done tons of internships and my parents are pressuring me to just enroll in law school because it will open more doors for me.pulstar1 wrote:what is your current occupation?
You can even veil your decision to take a year off as wanting more time to make your applications really strong.

My PT average was a 168. If I could get at least a 165 in Dec do you think I would have a shot at Georgetown if I decide to ED?
My dad is the kind of person that WANTS to help me and wants me to actively pursue something that he feels will benefit me in the future. He would certainly be disappointed if I chose to take a few more years to think about it and to work some random job.

I don't see why you can't have a family as a lawyer, unless you mean you want to be a full time, stay at home parent.Bravo wrote:I am interested in law and could see myself as an attorney but I also see myself having kids and raising a family.

I'm not sure about whether or not you should go to law school. But if you are going to go, then get your LSAT up as high as possible and apply to every school in the T-13. Take the offer from the school with the best graduate employment outcomes.Dirigo wrote:I mean, if your dad truly won't bat an eye at spending $250k, then go to the best school possible.

I think you have a shot at Georgetown ED with a 165/3.7.Bravo wrote:My PT average was a 168. I think you should try to go for a T13 though, particularly since money isn't an option. If you get a 168, for instance, Georgetown shouldn't be your choice.

I don't think I would want to be a permanent stay at home mom. I just don't want to be too stressed out during pregnancy and I want to have plenty of time with my children when they are young. A high pressure career wouldn't be my priority at that point.

Would Cornell be a better school to ED if I score mid to high 160s? I'm a little put off by Cornell's location. I suppose I should ask again when I get my Dec score back. Thank you guys so much for trying to help me out and for being understanding.Dirigo wrote:I think you have a shot at Georgetown ED with a 165/3.7.Bravo wrote:My PT average was a 168. Right. I guess it really depends on exactly what my Dec score is. If I score in the 170s I'll probably just blanket the T-13, but if I only get mid to high 160s I'm assuming I should probably pick a school to ED to.

Well pick a better school than Georgetown to ED if you're going to ED at all. A mid-160's score would probably snag you Georgetown RD.Bravo wrote:Right. Cornell, for instance, has much better employment prospects than Georgetown despite both having medians of 167.

I mean is there anything in life that you think you want to do?
I can tell you right now that living to please your parents will not make you happy.
And if they have the money to drop, why not actually follow some dreams and possibly fail, and then do law school or something if you decide it's what you want at that point?

I mean if you're gonna do it then do it, and at least you don't have to worry about paying for it, but I think this is just a naive approach.Bravo wrote:scottidsntknow wrote:I mean is there anything in life that you think you want to do?

I could see myself being happy doing a bunch of different things. I don't have a particular passion that I've always been dying to pursue or anything. I just desire to get a good education and a respectable job where I feel like I am making a difference and helping people. I want to make an honest income and to raise a family and to take advantage of opportunities presented to me. Part of me feels like it would be foolish to turn down the opportunity to attend law school. My dad told me that he would prefer if I tried it and then dropped out if I don't like it than if I don't attempt going at all. He's hoping once I start that I'll discover my passion along the way and if not then it will point me in the right direction.

I mean I'm more getting at law school in general. T14 isn't a good option if you don't want to be a lawyer. You're also not going to find any passions during 1L at least.Bravo wrote:I understand what you are saying and I can definitely see your point. I suppose I will wait until I get my Dec LSAT score and then reassess the situation. If I think my chances are pretty good that I'll get into a school with good employment prospects this cycle then I'll probably give it a shot. If my score doesn't improve much, maybe I'll reconsider law school. Thanks for talking this through with me.
