Should I take the LSAT again?

Post by dreamandy » Mon Nov 10, 2014 2:37 pm

Hey - so this has been bugging me for several weeks now, and I really wanna know what you guys think.
So I received a score of 173 on the September LSAT... a score that was far below my expectations. I had never scored below a 177 on my last few practice exams. It turned out, I had misread a single direction in a logic game, and that alone took 4 points off my score :(
I had always thought that logic games were my strength (I seldom missed more than a question), and so, needless to say, I was disappointed.
But-of course, excuses are excuses, and I vowed to myself that I'd make up for this by retaking the LSAT in December.

My original plan, then, had been to submit applications before thanksgiving with my original LSAT, and then retake the LSAT in December (I already registered) and hopefully, send the updated score to schools. But now, my counselor tells me that if you decide to take the December LSAT then schools will delay making decisions until the new scores come out - and this delay could be far more adverse than a few extra points on the LSAT. And, since I have been busy with applications, I haven't really had time to stay fresh with the LSAT, meaning that there's no guarantee that I would receive a marginally higher score. I do agree with her points, but I am confused.

I really want to go to one of the top 3 law schools, which was the reason that LSAT was vital for me... my GPA only stands at a 3.70, below the expected score for such students. I wish to do anything to maximize my chances.

Would retaking the LSAT and getting a few points higher be better, or would submitting earlier and hoping for the best be better?
I want to know what you guys think.

Go ahead and do it if you truly believe you can do better. That being said, you're out at YS and 50/50 at H.

Yeah it's pretty much H that I'm looking at now....
That being said, so would a score of 175 provide a greater boost than applying early w/o updating?
(either way, I'm still planning to apply before thanksgiving)
Since I haven't looked at LSAT for a while, I think 175 is a realistic goal that I should be setting.

Oh and do I have to notify schools that I'm retaking? Or do they know automatically?

So weird, I'm in the exact same situation. Like, the EXACT same--same GPA, same LSAT, and I hadn't been scoring below 177 for the last month. It was an RC passage that got me. Anyway, I decided not to retake (maybe not the best choice) because I wanted to get the apps done with as soon as possible and not hurt my chances at other T14 schools below the top 3 by applying too late in case I got a lower score. I'd ask yourself if you want to go to HYS for any reason other than bragging rights. Is there a genuine advantage for you to go to those schools over another great school with similar job prospects, even if it's ranked, say, #4 or #5 or even #10? Not necessarily when it comes to job prospects, at least. Another piece of advice I got was to retake the LSAT in June, once the stress of applications is over, and only use it if you score higher to get off the wait list or get more scholarship money. Not sure if that was sound advice or not but I'm thinking that over.

That GPA is right in the sweet spot where it might make sense to retake a 173.
