Applying to law school, but just lost my job. :(

Post by Chowfun » Sun Nov 09, 2014 9:09 pm

Will this affect my chances?

I took a year off. I just graduated this summer,

I only had the job for 3 months. I don't even put it on my resume. It was horrible and I was taken advantage of. I stayed very late and came in very early. I went places for my job and they never paid for my fares, etc. It was sort of like abuse the naive college grad until we don't need her anymore. I also was working with totally incompetent people in a terrible small company.

Currently, I'm still looking for a job. So, I feel this looks soo bad to not have a current position on my resume. Do I have to provide all employment history as well? Doesn't to having a current job look bad?

Depends on your LSAT/GPA

I'm taking it this December. Lol, Let me guess, if my LSAt is very high it won't matter and if it's decent it will blow all my chances.

So it doesn't matter, good then I don't feel that I've doomed myself.

I'm still trying to get a job asap!

Think about all the people who applied to law school in 2008 when the market crashed. I know quite a few people who went to T14 either because they got laid off or were dissatisfied with their jobs. Just pitch it the right way and you'll be fine.

You could also volunteer while you look for a job. Would give you something good to put on your resume during your transition period.

Yes, you should list all employment history. No it won't matter as long as you quit and were not fired.

why wouldn't losing a job dent OP's chances a little bit?

It would be better if op has a job when applying.

how is a layoff seen by the admissions? same as firing or quitting?

Because of the weight that LSAT and GPA carry in law school applications. You know this. We also don't know anything else about the OP's application, to be able to say that not having a job currently will make the slightest difference.

Dude graduated this summer. He said the job was only 3 months. He could easily leave it off his resume and not raise any red flags for that gap.

Who the employer was is important. If this was a national and reputed company then it might be bad. If it was a small town dishonest small business then no one will care. By making you pay out if pocket it seems like the latter. If your resume is short then I'd list it. They won't call. I probably had about 40 some odd employers, mostly temp or freelance positions before law school. I was fired from about 5 temp gigs for assorted reasons (refusing to hand out fliers, work extra days for free, pretend I was the driver in an accident where only I was listed on the insurance). I didn't list all of these "jobs" because my resume would have been 6 pages, and they were mostly the same job.
