Sent in an updated Personal Statement

Post by kingpin101 » Sat Nov 08, 2014 3:16 pm

So about a week after I applied to many schools, I decided to send in a revised PS. I was told that the document would be added to my file.
Two questions about that, though: I didn't make any indication that it was an updated file, so would the schools know which one is the revised PS? Also, would do reviewers simply read both versions anyway? I'm assuming here that the schools didn't simply swap out my old PS.

Don't sweat it. The secretaries at adcom offices deal with things like this all the time so I'm sure you're taken care of. Your new version will be what's read.

What if my app was already under review by the time I sent it? Would they somehow be informed of the document? Sorry if I'm being a neurotic.

All you can do is send it. It's out of your hands after that, so no use stressing over it.

With the exception of a few schools, PS barely matters. Most are painfully plain. Unless your first copy had serious--and I mean SERIOUS--red flags, you'll be fine.

Your neuroses leads me to believe your original PS was fine but you overthought it and reworked it like a spaz after you submitted your apps. This situation is very unconventional and confusing since you're not specifying exactly what the problem was with the original PS.

The bolded is almost certainly wrong. The new essay will be added to your file (and certainly identified as a new or updated version) but they won't swap out the old one. You can be sure that at least some reviewers will see that the PS is an updated version and look back at the first one to see what changed.

I don't see how what I said was almost certainly wrong. You said yourself the new one will be identified as the updated version. Reviewers would surely read the updated and intended PS. I was simply assuaging OP's fears that his new PS wouldn't be marked and read as such.

Regarding the reason why I updated my PS, it's because my first one had some glaring typos. I'm just a bit worried that since I sent my updated version a week after I submitted my original apps, they may have already reviewed my app. For example, I got a Georgetown interview invitation the day after I submitted the updated file. I mean, all the schools did accept my updated file, so does that imply they didn't review my app yet?

GULC probably decided to interview regardless of PS. Don't read too many tea leaves on this.
