Law schools that are progressive on public k-12 education

Post by apartius » Fri Nov 07, 2014 2:21 pm

I was wondering what law schools really have a good progressive record on public k-12 education... i.e. the social justice, equity, and poverty side of education. I do not want to go to a law school that is supported by Eli Broads or the Walton family etc.

Thanks

Harsh crowd. What are the most liberal law schools in the Top 14? I think that will give me a start on where to look.

This is such a specific arm of public interest I don't think anyone here would know where to look. I would try to find professors researching on the subject but doubt you'll find much.

berkeley is considered liberal
one of their biggest donors is bank of america
and they get major support from several multinational conglomerates

i don't get the point of this thread
you won't find a single decent school that doesn't take money from corporations with less-than-sterling liberal credentials

I don't understand your connection between how the school is funded and the politics of it's faculty or student base.

It's not like BP is out there funding law schools and forcing Liberal faulty members out the door.

well tbf sometimes things can get a little out of hand in my contracts [Sponsored by General Motors] class
in last week's lecture, after we donned our "limit tort liability now!" baseball caps and pledged allegiance to ayn rand, our VP of educational synergy told us class was cancelled on election day so we could go out and suppress voters
which was super inconsiderate since our lrw [Sponsored by Goodyear] memos on repealing the lilly ledbetter fair pay act were due the next day

I completely understand. I meant in terms of the politics of the professors and if you knew of any professors doing research/representing folks in cases that are more along the public interest case that I am interested in. I appreciate jewkidontheblock's response.

Avoid super religious schools (Regent, Ave Maria) and you'll be fine. Even smaller state schools in ultra-red states usually have pretty liberal atmospheres and faculties.

I guess you could start looking at what districts stayed blue, see if they have cities in them with the law school you want to go to.

If you were doing a PhD in education policy, this might be a concern. It really shouldn't be a concern for law school. If you're going to law school to do social justice education law stuff, it's going to be about how you can make that path for yourself, not which law school you go to.

Education law doesn't sound like a real thing.

It is, it's just not a biglaw thing. Schools/school districts get sued a lot, so you get lawyers on both sides, though plaintiff types are usually going to be general civil rights types who probably don't do only education law. On the other side you get both in-house attorneys for school districts and firms that specialize in representing schools/school districts. But it's local mid- to shitlaw (at least in the markets I know). There's also education work in state government. But there'll be more work on behalf of schools/educators, which doesn't sound like OP's cup of tea.
