Stan nyu duke cornell at Wilson Sonsini palo alto
-Please don't quote
Just came back after attending the info session
One interesting moment came in the end when one guy asked about how his friends graduating from top 10 or t14 are having hard time finding jobs and all the deans started beating up the guy about how the market is robust and they don't know anyone who can't find a job in Cali from their schools.
Anyone here attended and find it hard to believe?
The cornell dean geiger could have been the only dean on the panel who without any bs about holistic app process said only 2 numbers matters in the process. All the talk after that by dean Hoye of Duke and NYU dean about how they look for trends in the transcripts and the UG college seemed hollow.

It's far from easy to get a job in CA from three of those schools.

I was at the same event and I didn't interpret what Dean Geiger said the same way that you apparently did.

I was there as well, and I didn't interpret Geiger's comments that way either. I took it that, because everybody is so concerned with those two numbers, he was going to go into how they look at them.hopefulsplitter93 wrote:World's not big enough for the two of you guys....who is right?quadsbaby wrote:I was at the same event and I didn't interpret what Dean Geiger said the same way that you apparently did.

Two for three is enough for a circuit decision, and enough to determine who is right.PrizeFighter wrote:I was there as well, and I didn't interpret Geiger's comments that way either. cool that attendees are visitors here. prizefighter, were you the guy sitting in the second row?PrizeFighter wrote:I was there as well, and I didn't interpret Geiger's comments that way either. well, geiger began by saying that only 2 numbers matter lsat and gpa. Why would you interpret his comments as anything else? Then he made an elaborate joke about a third thing they look for. The satire was only in what he said about the third thing, not in the initial statement about lsat and gpa.
It also appeared that bearded guy at the end was raising a highly relevant issue related to jobs, and it wasn't good of deans to use him as a punching bag when they didn't really have a good answer for the placements issue.

its entirely possible that trends are important for "ties," particularly of those apps who are splitters. In other words, think about three applicants, all with a ~3.6:
- one who has a bunch of C's Frosh year, and then aces the next three years
- one who has somewhat consistent grades throughout four years of undergrad
- one who aces Frosh-Jr year, but phones in senior year.

No, I wasn't that guy. I didn't say anything except to them individually, so good luck figuring out who I was.appind wrote:cool that attendees are visitors here. prizefighter, were you the guy sitting in the second row?PrizeFighter wrote:I was there as well, and I didn't interpret Geiger's comments that way either. I didn't catch geiger saying "only" two numbers matter, but it's certainly possible I just missed that. Even if he did say that, however, his tone led me to believe that he was being humorous about the fact that prevailing wisdom says they reduce everybody to those two numbers. Having said that, I still believe those two numbers are ALMOST all that matters. I think that even admissions deans at elite schools think that "holistic" things are more important than they actually are because they are comparing so many similar applicants. So, unless you have some extremely rare softs, I tend to believe that the holistic stuff is just used as Big Dog describes.
I totally agree that they got defensive and kinda beat up the bearded guy. Buried in their assault, however, they mentioned a few key things: "How well did these friends of yours who are tying to get back to California do in their school?" "How wide of a net did they cast?" "There are top law schools, and then there are TOP law schools." The last one made me chuckle because, even though all four schools are considered elite compared to the entire field, there is still a big gulf between Cornell V. Stanford or NYU.

The bearded guy actually mentioned "his friends at top 10 or/and top 14 law schools" when talking about his friends who aren't able to find job in CA so he was referring to what even the deans would consider the top schools when asked despite the wide gulf amongst even them. They did mention a lot of relevant questions in their assault, but it wasn't the right place for the poor guy to get into a heated debate with the deans and he wisely chose not to. Seemed like a little power play domination by the deans in a setting where they could and I thought they should be better than that.
nyu dean was the one with a little bit on the crazy side imo but found his BIAJ reference funny.

They totally went from politely letting each other speak one at a time to talking over each other as they defended their student's prospects. Hit a nerve much?appind wrote:The bearded guy actually mentioned "his friends at top 10 or/and top 14 law schools" when talking about his friends who aren't able to find job in CA so he was referring to what even the deans would consider the top schools when asked despite the wide gulf amongst even them. I got the same vibe from the nyu dean, and he reminded me of the mad scientist played by Tim Blake Nelson from the Edward Norton version of the Hulk, but he seemed like a pretty cool dude when I got to talk to him a bit after.
