"What other law schools are you applying to?" - Fordham
The Fordham Law application states:
"Indicate the name of any law school to which you have applied in the past, are now applying to, or intend to apply to in the future. If additional space is needed please make use of an attachment labeled "Additional Law Schools." Please select the school from drop down list below."
I'm going to list my schools accordingly but I feel like this is a BS question and it shouldn't be any of their business where else I apply. They're clearly trying to increase their yield by looking for candidates who are applying to few schools.
I mean why else would they want to know this?

They collect that information for marketing purposes. They want to know who their competitors are to better target prospective students and know how they need to sell themselves. It has nothing to do with yield protect and it's not considered in evaluating your application.

Can you leave it blank? All of the schools that I applied which has that questioned left it optional. I never filled it in.

It doesn't specifically state "optional" like other fields explicitly do, but it's not a required field so it can be skipped. I think I'll just stay on the safe side and fill it in. Mouse is probably right and it's just for marketing purposes.smile0751 wrote:Can you leave it blank? All of the schools that I applied which has that questioned left it optional. Re: "What other law schools are you applying to?" - Fordham
I decided not to apply to Fordham for reasons offered by many at this site, but I had actually completed the application before I decided not to submit it. I was nervous to leave that question blank, because it was, as you say, specifically not marked as optional, so I did a dodge, and said, "I'm not yet certain of the places I will definitely apply, but among those I will likely be submitting an application to are X and X", where X and X were schools on the level of Fordham or a bit above. This had the benefit of being honest, while not complete, since I was applying to the entire T14, as well. I also think the question is BS, and even if they claim it's just for marketing, I was nervous they would see the (better) schools I was applying to and ding me out of fear that there was no way I would accept their offer, so I tried to find a weasel answer that didn't sound too weasely.

FSU has that question, but it isn't a text box. It's a list of schools with check boxes. I have also had the dilemma of figuring out what to do with it.

Not to hijack my own thread but what's with the Fordham hate? Yea it's not T14 but at least there's a chance -- albeit a relatively small one at 25% of the last class going to biglaw -- to break into biglaw. And if you're at the top of your class what's to say you can't transfer to NYU/Columbia/Georgetown anywho?

Looking at Fordham on lawschoolnumbers, it seems that the school is extrememly stingy with scholarship money.

There's almost no scenario where Fordham makes sense. It is way too expensive, and the odds of BigLaw are way too low, to justify sticker. If you can get a full-ride, you can probably get a decent discount at a school like Cornell, which offers you a much better shot at gainful employment.

Fordham is expensive, you're fuckered if you don't get biglaw, it doesn't give scholarships in a meaningful way, and you have to live in NYC. Whats to like?

Undergrad admissions consultant here. Schools are barred by law from using this info in admissions decisions, at least at the undergrad level. The yield protect fear is an old one, and schools used to do it, but not anymore. Its for marketing and recruiting and generally measuring the zeitgeist. Of course, you have no obligation to their marketing department, so this field is, from a strategic standpoint, legitimately optional.

high tuition, high col, weak portability, stingy with scholarships -- if you're at the top of your class and you transfer, you're still looking at 2 years of sticker at NYU, Columbia, Georgetownku546 wrote:Not to hijack my own thread but what's with the Fordham hate? Attending Fordham will leave you borrowing around $95-100k for living expenses alone, and more realistically you'll have a tremendous amount of debt financing because of their stinginess in offering tuition discounts/"scholarships." The majority of Fordham students will not get jobs after graduating that have salaries which justify such a huge, high interest debt load.

It's funny how people on TLS are so quick to judge a school by its "Biglaw" placement, but nobody ever brings this up.NYCFAN1 wrote:i'd be willing to bet some of those "big law" jobs are doc review/e-disocvery gigs, too
