Anything to lose?

Post by JohnJDDorian37 » Thu Oct 23, 2014 5:14 pm

All,

Wondering if someone with experience on the mechanics of the admissions process could help me answer this question:

If I submit an application with one LSAT score on record, and then while my application is still pending take the LSAT again, does that score AUTOMATICALLY get sent to law schools with which I have a pending application, or do I have to ask (and possibly pay) LSAC to re-send my score report?

Here's why I was wondering: say I am already admitted to school A but am on the wait-list (or application still pending) at school B where I would prefer to go. Do I have anything to lose by re-taking every administration of the LSAT while I am still waiting for a final decision from school B? If new scores don't automatically go to school B, then:

i) if I get a worse score, school B need not know I even took it again;
ii) if I get the same score, depending on the score I can choose whether it is advantageous for me that school B know about it; and
iii) if I get a better score, I can have it sent over to school B.

Thanks.

Yes the score will automatically be updated to your LSAC account so the schools should both know about it, although it doesn't hurt to email and inform a school you've applied to of the increase. As for all of your situations, all law schools with the possible exceptions of HYS will only care about your highest LSAT score. Therefore you will benefit if the score is higher, and it will not harm you as long as you don't have a DRAMATIC decrease in score from your first administration. Retaking is almost universally the best choice if you are on the border to get into your top choice law school. However that all being said, only retake when you feel ready to maximize your score, law school isn't going anywhere.

My situation is somewhat unusual, as I already have a very strong score (and am considering re-taking more for the personal satisfaction of hitting my goal score). While I think a dramatic decrease in score is unlikely, I do want to avoid putting off law schools who might think it odd that I am re-taking the LSAT at all.

Get a better hobby than taking the LSAT.
