ED UCLA

Post by kwabbs » Sat Oct 18, 2014 5:24 pm

I have always wanted to attend UCLA for law school.. I was planning on applying E.D. for there so that they would know UCLA is the top of my list.. I've read on here to not do this.. can anyone explain why?

Yes, because 300k dollars of debt (sticker price at UCLA) is an unconscionable amount of debt to put on anyone, let alone a UCLA student who only has a 33% chance of getting a (biglaw) job that would allow them to pay it off.

Do most schools not offer any scholarship $$ to E.D. admits? Why is that the case? Because they know you're in a binding agreement to go no matter what so they can make you pay full price?

The way to bring down the absurd cost of law school is to gain admission to several schools and negotiate scholarships. An ED acceptance prevents you from doing this, and as twenty said 300k in debt for a UCLA degree is an absolutely awful idea.

I'm having trouble understanding where the 300K numbers come from.. the website says 45,226 in state tuition.. x 3.. would only come out to 135,000.. is it 45 a semester not per year?

Also, under what circumstances would it be a good idea to ED for a school? If any..

IMO:

Good idea if...

1. GI Bill
2. Your want to go to NW, GW, or BU
3. Money is not an object for you at all

Tuition increases, interest on loans, loan origination fees, 20K a year for rent+food, etc.

Also even if it was only 135K that's still to much to pay for UCLA. Anything over 100K including room and board, etc. is too much IMO.

Obviously because they're full scholarships, admission under GWU/BU/NU's ED programs are substantially more competitive numerically than regular admissions. Regardless, more applicants should do this, and it's a shame they don't.

Being a lawyer means doing a ton of research each and every day. Time to practice!

Oh & ED'ing UCLA is not a good move. I'm from San Diego too so I understand the infatuation with UCLA but it's not worth paying full-price for.
Don't sell yourself short. Get a great LSAT score and apply to UCLA and USC regular decision. Also look into UCI if you're intent on staying in Southern California for law school and beyond. Play their offers off of each other to get yourself as much scholarship money as possible.

Quick question to piggy back this thread. I have applied regular decision to BU, but did not know that their ED came with a full scholarship. Although I would likely just be rolled over to RD, do you know if it is possible to switch an app from RD to ED?

I mean this in this in the friendliest sense possible, but you should probably lurk more. Just browse the forums and become familiar with the subtopics and the terminology. That's going to be much more effective than you turning this thread into some kind of answerbot for random, unrelated questions.

But yeah, don't ED UCLA, or any school that doesn't give a full ride for EDing. You lose all leverage.

As long as the admissions office hasn't made a decision on your RD, and the deadline for ED hasn't passed, I see no reason why not. Contact them and ask for the binding ED form.

Thanks, that is pretty much what I figured. I will contact them Monday morning.

Lol I'm very new to Internet forums and communities.. I try my best to stay off all my technology as much as possible.. No twitter or fb for me! TLS has definitely become an exception due to the mass amount of valuable info available! Maybe I'll look over that accronym guide on here a little more :)

You'll find this site really helpful. The first thing we can help you with is don't ED to UCLA unless money is not an issue to you.
