Diversity statement? Yes or no

Post by surf » Mon Oct 06, 2014 11:07 am

morning all.

was talking to a prelaw advisor a while back about my PS. got to talking and she suggested I write a diversity statement.

white male, middle class upbringing, nothing special. was raised in a household with parents whose religions differ quite greatly. started off being an all christian family. I was brainwashed. by 5th grade my mom became sober after years of alcohol and pill abuse and was 'enlightened' by buddhist teachings. /brainwashing

my dad retained his country club republican pals while my mom had a whole new group of AA friends who are quite different from pop's crowd.

I didn't see this as much of a reason to write a statement. this situation has opened my mind to different religions and to be tolerant of everybody, as opposed to shutting them out and 'praying for them' (hint: gay brother). I doubt I should write it. aren't these statements more geared to people who actually had really harsh upbringings? in a sense I guess it is diversity, but most likely not what they're looking for??? thank you

There's a lot of relevant (and recent) discussion here: http://www.top-law-schools.com/forums/v ... 2&t=237265

I'm mostly agnostic on white people DS's, but I think I lean toward, if you can give an interesting discussion of how your point of view is unique and interesting, I would use the DS as an opportunity do it. It may not help much, but unless you say something incredibly obtuse/racist, you're not going to hurt yourself.

cool so 1 no and 1 maybe. I'm on the fence about it too. if it can't hurt me then I don't see why not. but if admissions happens to lean way right I'll likely be thought of as lost, in need of help, immoral, a danger to society, on and on

my real life friends are near worthless. still in UG hitting the bong with no drive. its cool. I'm in a bad spot atm lol.

I probably won't write it. I guess that aspect of my upbringing has really shaped how I view people, life, the world around me. growing up in a conservative town it was a real eye opener when everyone who surrounds you has tunnel vision.

thanks for the reply !

I completely agree! Please keep your statement open and share what is heartfelt. See, it is your statement and if you are hesitant than please don't do it. There is one simple rule behind writing a statement and it is related to personal expression. Prepare your statement and go for a credible cum professional service for checking it. You can choose SPAM USED TO BE HERE this service, they are user friendly and quite affordable. But still, believe in your instinct and do what makes you comfortable alright :)
