Food for thought...
How does University of Hawai'i at Manoa Law not get more play on this site???
The logic here is simple,... if not HYSCCNP, then might as well go UH.
The law is the law, no matter where you study, amirght?

All: I can easily see how easy it is to assume this. But actually, my situation is quite the opposite.
I am not affiliated with UH, or the state of Hawaii for that matter, in any way. Promise.
I graduated undergrad a couple years ago, and have been toying around with the idea of law school since. I've paid attention to the US news rankings and all the hype on where you go (mainly via this site), for the last three years too. Though I clearly understand how every aspiring lawyer has HYS on their mind, I am just trying to throw around a different perspective.

When I first started looking at law schools, before I found TLS or anything beyond LSACs site... I was gonna do Temple or Hawaii.

Can you speak to how your thought process on this evolved?

No worries. I just wanted to clear the air that theres no conflict of interest in me/UH.
Im just putting out the idea that by applying to UH, one may have the opportunity to get a quality education and have a unique law school experience.

I found out how learnable the LSAT was and got better at it. As much fun as 3 years in Hawaii would be, law school isn't a vacation and Hawaii doesn't have good jobs numbers.MrBlueSky! wrote:congrats on NYU!phillywc wrote:When I first started looking at law schools, before I found TLS or anything beyond LSACs site... People going there just aren't getting jobs, and those that aren't getting well paying jobs. I've also heard over and over how insular the legal market is, I don't know that some random person from the continental US would easily get a job there.
Plus Greenwich Village is still a pretty great place to spend three years.

But the employment outcomes are not the same no matter where you study. It's not HYSCCNP at one level and everyone else at another.MrBlueSky! wrote:How does University of Hawai'i at Manoa Law not get more play on this site???

Originally from the west coast, and have lived in D.C. for three years. The stuffiness has hardly been bearable.
..Also, to phillywc: great point on the LSAT, and job statistics. Plus Greenwich Village is so chill. Well done.

I've lived in Hawaii. It's not what you're imagining if you're trying to escape DC "stuffiness". Yes, it's physically gorgeous, but it's incredibly insular. Locals > NonLocals in just about everything, and I'm sure the legal economy there is no different. If you're going to go to UH Law, you better be a born and bred local, preferably one who went to Punahou High School. I was there on a federal job, so I didn't really care, but the local networks are incredibly strong in Hawaii, probably more so than just about everywhere in the United States.MrBlueSky! wrote:Have never lived in Hawaii.TheSpanishMain wrote:Have you ever lived in Hawaii?MrBlueSky! wrote:No worries. Is your profile up to date? ...see you've been "accepted" all across the spectrum.
fyi, my plan would be to return mainland for work asap. Compete for "clerkships" and other PI preftigiuousness.

Don't go to Hawaii unless you are from and want to work in Hawaii.

It's not really obnoxious...unless you're trying to get a job. Like I said, I had a federal job so I didn't care. There's a lot of nice stuff about Hawaii too. Kua Aina Burger is great.MrBlueSky! wrote:Man, that must have be an obnoxious social dynamic to have to maneuver within...thanks for the heads up.TheSpanishMain wrote: I've lived in Hawaii. Profile is up to date, although just to clarify I applied to a lot of places that I wouldn't have otherwise because my wife is active duty military and I was specifically looking at places near bases. Also, that was before I really understood how regional a lot of schools are.
Going to Hawaii to work in mainland PI would be a hilarious mismatch. I think you can safely cross it off your list.
Yeah, Hawaii for mainland PI and clerkships did kind of trip my flame radar, too.phillywc wrote: Starting to sound like flame, but just in case...

I don't know why I'm responding to this, but...
Job placement, outside the top schools, is incredibly regional. UH is pretty much only going to get you a job in Hawaii, and then only for the top of the class since there are about eight legal jobs in the state.
Living in Hawaii is incredibly expensive, the traffic is terrible, and there are tourists everywhere. (I haven't lived there, but a good friend did for several years while her husband was stationed there.)

Fact: Colin Kaepernick went to the University of Alaba...Nevada.
Does TLS propagate the US News World Report hype? I think so.
Do we know for a fact that TLS is not in bed with the LSAT test-prep company industry?
