I would get the targeted one and submit that, but unless it is a glowing recommendation I would not bother with the general one.

^I disagree, I think it would be good to include a letter from your employer, especially if you took time off between undergrad and law school and got work experience. OP's plan sounds fine with me as long as they make sure that each version of the letter gets sent to the right place(s).

I will qualify what I said. If you have been out of undergrad for more than 4 years or so then it could be worth it. If you are a K - JD I don't think it's worth it.

This is such terrible and wrong advice that I logged in just to refute it.

If you are working anywhere in an office setting, you should get an employer letter of rec. It's required at Northwestern and I believe it's highly recommended at other schools if you have ANY WE. Cutting the line at 4 years of WE is incredibly stupid.

You should ask for two letters if you have a good relationship with the partner. Consider submitting a second letter from an associate if that person knows you and your work product better.

Yeah in fact if you're a K-JD it might be even more important as it shows you can operate in a work environment.

guys, any opinion on getting a letter of rec from an employer with whom i worked for after graduating high school?, I am a kjd, but took a year off after graduating high school to save some money for college. so my case is a bit different compared to the usual kjd. I'm planning to have one academis rec and one employer rec, thoughts?

I am clearly in the minority here with my opinion, because of that I would follow their advice and submit it. Worst case scenario, it will not hurt you.
