JUST got a job...put it on my resume?

Post by Alembic_of_Man » Mon Sep 08, 2014 8:55 pm

Background:

I'm applying for law school for the fall of 2015 - I guess, like most people here. However, I just recently got hired as a full time CSA for a regional airline - I'm very much excited to begin this employment because it gives me the security that I'll be having some gold in my pockets by the time I begin going to law school.

Situation:
I'm applying to a bunch of midrange schools (25-80ish) and I really want to blow their socks off - I mean, who isn't? And I know the admission staff would be very happy to know I'm employed full time and not some youngster kid fresh out of college (anything to downplay THAT reality!). My resume is full to the brim - I've worked part time all throughout college as well.

Question:
Do you think it's worth it to shave off a few older and yet information-chalk employment data to make room for this new employment?

I haven't been here long enough to give a substantial account of my time here yet, I maybe have about a weeks-worth of data to provide - but at the same time it shows that I'm actively being paid and being responsible and all that good stuff law schools like to here.

I guess if I could distill it further, if you skimmed over what I've already written - What is more important for a typical law school admission council:
a) documented experience - regardless of how old it is (we're talking 0-5 years in the past)
b) current experience - regardless of how little you can actually report about it

My resume currently lists: Government internship, work with a non-profit for a class, a freelance technical writing gig, working for a gas station, and volunteering at a small heritage museum.

I have been told my resume should be compressed to one page - so I left out a number of other employers I've had. Of course, this resume is morphed for employment...could I get away with a multiple-page resume for law schools? If so, this entire problem could be resolved in a snap.

Thank you for reading through this and I sincerely hope someone can give me a few pointers. I also hope anyone else is having a similar problem so that the assistance provided in answering my query can reach further than my own!

I really want to blow their socks off
Only stellar lsat scores do this and I'm not even sure about that.

That's absolutely true. But I want to give the full package and not leave anything less to be desired. Assistance in this manner would be greatly appreciated - regardless of how miniscule you find this facet :)

LSAT/GPA combo is the biggest part of the battle. Just study the LSAT/GPA profiles of the schools you're considering, and visit Law School Numbers to get an idea of what your scholarship packages will look like.

As far as painting a picture of yourself, spend some real time developing a personal statement worth reading and focus your resume on the parts of your work experience that demonstrate leadership, intellectual ability, and work ethic. If you have something that can honestly attest to an interest in servicing the public, put emphasis on that.

I appreciate the responses and banter and will take them to heart - but I would still appreciate simply answering the question. If I worded it to obscurely, here are a few extra.

How many pages were the resumes you provided?

Did you create unique resumes for certain schools?

In general (and I apologize in advance for the level of ambiguity), which do law schools weigh heavier:
a) An applicant who shows a longer series of employment, but unemployed now, or
b) An applicant who shows a relatively brief series of employment and is currently employed

If both can be shown, then which should be emphasized?

Law schools weigh GPA and LSAT way higher than anything to do with employment.

Also, unless the school specifies otherwise, a 2-pp resume is fine - an application resume isn't really like a job-seeking resume, and schools tend to prefer comprehensiveness. But most people can fit their experience onto one page, unless you've been working for 10 years or the like. And law schools will probably want to see what you're doing now.

Don't over-think it. Most law schools will accept resumes over 1 page so if you have that many jobs to list then it's okay. You can always shave off some content by giving short or no descriptions for common jobs (e.g. fast food, waiter, receptionist). A law school application resume is more like a CV (but still NOT a CV, don't go crazy) than a 1-page job resume. I generally advise not to leave off any job after high school.
