Character & Fitness Questions (2014-2015 Cycle)
Inspired by t-14orbust's thread for last cycle, I will be listing all of the T14s' C&F requirements here. A few apps aren't open yet (Yale, Harvard, Northwestern, Georgetown), but I'll add those once they are. Thought it might be a helpful resource for anyone who doesn't have access to applications (for whatever reason). Keep in mind, future cycle applicants, that these might change after this cycle. Also, if anyone wants to send me non-T14 C&F questions, I'll add those too!
-------------------------------
Yale: Please note that your answers to the following questions and any information included in your Character and Fitness attachment may become part of the character and fitness review of the bar in the state(s) in which you intend to practice. Admission to the practice of law depends not only on adequate academic performance in law school and successful completion of the bar examination, but also on satisfaction of the requirements of the particular jurisdiction as to proof of good character. These requirements differ from state to state, and applicants should inform themselves of the requirements of the jurisdictions in which they are interested.

If I could offer some advice for ease: some schools require traffic violations and stuff. I found it easier to just include them on all of my C&F stuff since it realistically wasn't a problem anyway. It makes life easier than trying to hide it from some places who won't care.

Re: Character & Fitness Questions (2014-2015 Cycle)
Thanks for this! I would have completely overlooked a couple of instances from my past that I really forgot about it.
What should I do if I don't have any documentation and there is no record anywhere that I can obtain, and I don't remember exact details of the event (exact date etc.)?
For example, at some point during my first year when I was a minor, I was detained and held overnight at the police station because I was intoxicated (drunk tank). No charges or penalties were incurred and as far as I know, there is no record of it. They just held me for my own safety until I sobered up. I can name the month it occurred, but that's about it (it was over a decade ago). Just explain to the best of my ability?
Also, would a speeding ticket fall under "minor traffic violation" or should that be disclosed?

Sorry if this is a stupid question but how do you go about getting those records (speeding tickets that were reduced/dropped; one I may have just payed from like 5 years ago but I couldn't even tell you what city just the state; or another civil infraction/moving violation that was dropped)? Never been arrested or booked or brought in or read my miranda or had a jury trial etc. Just traffic court, fighting speeding tickets, getting them pled down to moving violations or dismissed because the officer didn't show up etc. just the usual teenage stuff. Not talking reckless driving or excessive speed.Attax wrote:If I could offer some advice for ease: some schools require traffic violations and stuff. I only have a slew of traffic violations but filling these out and rereading my apps has really made me paranoid that I have an arrest I've suppressed from my memory and am going to have issues with the bar...

does anybody have any good links regarding how much detail we should go into? Specifically if our university cleared us of charges, how much of a narrative should we provide regarding the alleged incident?

I'd also like to know about this. I have a couple speeding tickets and a red light violation. Never been to court. Are these considered minor traffic?

I hate the vague wording.
Like are you supposed to report a parking ticket? A fix it expired registration ticket?
Can I gloat that I've never gotten a parking ticket to play down multiple felonies? (Joke)

I'm no C&F expert, but I'm pretty sure most speeding tickets and red light tickets fall under "minor traffic violations"
otherwise... better safe than sorry, better to over-disclose than under-disclose

Re: Character & Fitness Questions (2014-2015 Cycle)
How do we go about getting a record/listing of those things in order to disclose? I've heard to contact individual police stations but what if you can't remember what city it occurred in. Is there a way to contact the state first and get the name of the city it occurred in and then go directly to each police station?xylocarp wrote:I'm no C&F expert, but I'm pretty sure most speeding tickets and red light tickets fall under "minor traffic violations"

Never been in trouble for anything *knock on wood* but I don't want to have a C&F issue because I forgot to disclose a parking/speeding ticket from 5 years ago I completely forgot about.

Oh, and minor traffic violations includes speeding, red light violations, stop sign, failing to yield, bicycling on sidewalk etc. Many fare evasion tickets fall under this umbrella term as well (for example failing to show proof of fare on public transportation). None of these are a problem.
DUI is not a minor violation, you need to write addendum. Reckless driving in most places can be either a felony or misdemeanor (you need to write an addendum) but consult the laws in your state first.

Thank you very much for taking the time out to respond to this. Definitely one of the more helpful posts I've come across on TLS.Cpt Zapp Brannigan wrote: For everyone fussing about this section over infractions, that a deep breath. It's meant to sift out the more serious shit-domestic violence, fraudsters, sex offenders etc. If you get a rare app that actually does ask to include traffic infractions, just include what info you have to the best of your ability. If you list two speeding tickets but later realize you forget to list that you had failure to yield ticket ten years, don't sweat it. Forgot the names, dates of a ticket? Totally not a problem, just write down approximates. It's all about being honest. Where things get tricky are for those with felonies. That's tough and very much a case by case thing.

Does anybody know if law schools will hold it against us if we went through university disciplinary proceedings multiple times but were found not accountable? My incidents weren't for anything super serious it was just res life stuff, so I'm wondering how much that will matter.

Re: Character & Fitness Questions (2014-2015 Cycle)
Any assistance, thoughts, opinions would be great!
During my first semester freshmen year, I received an academic honestly violation (which is not on my transcript) for answering a question on the class facebook page about whether or not there would be T/F questions on the test. It was labeled as unauthorized assistance. As it happened so long ago and was not a serious infraction, how much will hurt me in this admissions cycle?

Re: Character & Fitness Questions (2014-2015 Cycle)
anybody else want to weigh in on this? for some schools it's clear if they care about these incidents, but others are more confusing because they ask about "disciplinary action."Cpt Zapp Brannigan wrote:walter white: for the majority of applications I've seen, you don't need to disclose that. Technically you were not admonished/punished/convicted or arrested. You did nothing wrong and for all intensive purposes the incidents never happened (in regards to you). But you need to read each application VERY carefully. If the wording somehow makes you think you should include it, write an addendum. You should be fine anyway.
I emailed a school asking for clarification as to what "disciplinary action" means and their answer was very vague.
Anna Ivey said in a blog post that "disciplinary action" includes proceedings where you're found not accountable, but I've been getting mixed messages on TLS about disclosing these kinds of incidents.
