Do adcomms check applicants' Facebooks?

Post by Cradle6 » Wed Aug 27, 2014 9:19 am

It's well established that a potential boss might check your Facebook to find incriminating information, but does this happen for law school ever?

Shouldn't affect me, but I'm curious regardless.

I know one of my schools did - they mentioned noticing that I had "liked" their Facebook page. I thought it was hilarious they brought that up but I keep my page unusually clean. I think the best rule of thumb is to assume an ad comm does look you up and considering locking down any profiles if you're concerned.

Inh - was there anything google worthy in your ap that sparked interest? I know that a bunch of schools have searched at least one person. Wondering If there would be a reason for them to look you up and stumble on the your page.

I think if an applicant has "liked" a school's Facebook page it's very easy for a school just to look at those names and match them with an applicant, then look at your page. That seems a little different from just choosing to go look at applicants' FB pages (which, to be clear, schools may do, I just don't know).

If so you can just make your profile exceptionally clean or private. Clean is probably safer.

They do check here too. I was outed by an adcomm at an ASW using my TLS handle.

This. I think LS AdComms are more likely to check this site than try and look up applicants on FB. I also was outed by a school on TLS after I made comments about a school I applied to.

Yeah, but tbf it was a really chill adcomm and she was laughing with us about it (a few other TLSers were involved too). It was definitely not in a negative light.

I read somewhere that Mike Spivey, former Dean of Admissions, would always say others and he would always check TLS to try and see what their applicants were saying. They weren't trying to find incriminating evidence, but rather see if they would be coming to their school if admitted.

That being said, you still never want anything overtly negative on TLS or social media - probably best to play it safe and assume they check you out.
