Should I continue trying? or is it a waste of time...?

Post by smart-comment » Mon Jun 30, 2014 2:25 pm

Sorry if this is the wrong section, I dont know whether to post here or in the "what are my chances" section, anyway...

My current cumulative GPA is 3.33. I just graduated from community college and will go onto a four-year.

With a 3.33 GPA I have about 1 C/C-/C+/C+ (first semester, I messed up like many other freshman do) and 1 D (Chemistry, not my thing, no interest. Had to take it as elective). My GPA was a high like 3.8 my second semester and fell down 3.33 when I graduated.

In my four-year school, I'm planning to get A's here and there with a total number of credits of maybe 145-150 to boost it up to 3.7. or a LITTLE under hopefully.

I am hoping to apply to Cornell, NYU, and Fordham law schools here in NY. They all want GPA's of about 3.65-3.68+ and LSAT of 165-170+

Say my by the time I get my Bachelor's my cumulative GPA will be 3.68-3.7 and I have a good LSAT score.

1) Do you think although I've boosted my GPA a lot, they will look at the C's and D and not bother?

2) If so, will a high LSAT make up for it?

Please be nice and just answer the questions, Thanks!

Is this a hypothetical or do you have a good LSAT score? If so, could you give us a number or range of numbers?

You should always try, but have you taken a diagnostic lsat yet? I don't really know how you're coming up with your predictions. Not everyone can score that high. A lot of people just don't have that in them.

A semester's worth of As and semester's worth of Cs = 2 semester's worth of Bs. Your overall GPA is really all that will matter. Upward trends and students doing terribly their first year or two is pretty common. As long as you're above a 3.5 and kill the LSAT (170+), you'll be in great shape.

You'll be fine. Just use the resources on this forum for your LSAT study, it is a learn-able test. 165+ and these scenarios will begin to become available (maybe even 163-164 for Fordham, but it's not worth sticker).

Yes, raise your GPA.

A 3.65 / 171+ is a virtual lock at NYU.

brut wrote:The Fordham Law Difference

Here, a solid grounding in legal theory is balanced with hands-on learning about the craft of lawyering. Our students benefit from a curriculum and faculty that has earned a reputation for excellence. Their studies are enriched by essential and innovative international opportunities. And they graduate prepared to practice law--from day one.
>29% of the class completely unemployed or in short-term/part-time stints a full nine months after graduation

At Fordham Law, a spirit of service has been central since our founding in 1905. Our focus on ethics help students navigate the difficult issues they'll face as they pursue careers in our increasingly complex world. Our community of alumni provides a supportive network around the country and around the globe. And our dynamic location in New York City ensures our students access to opportunities that can only be found in a world-class city.
>Only 63.4% of the Class of 2013 actually secured long-term, full-time, JD-required jobs

Fordham Law’s unique approach to legal education has rightly earned the School widespread praise as a leader among American law schools. In fact, Fordham Law is considered one of the top law schools by U.S. News & World Report.
>One out of every seven "employed" students was in a short-term, part-time, or non-professional gig funded by the school

In terms of ranks and measures, the results of our compelling approach to legal education are excellent. As a top law school, Fordham Law is very selective. The School is one of the top 25 most selective law schools in the nation, measured in terms of the LSAT scores of its most recent entering class.
>LSAT median has dropped every year for the last three years, along with every other measure of student selectivity

Sticker is like 250-300k. That's a bad idea in general, and especially at Fordham, where most of the class will not get jobs that will allow them to make those payments. Fordham is a fine school if you're going at a huge discount, but it's not even close to being worth full price. Personally, I don't think any law school is worth full price.

If I was targeting NYC Big Law and was a little bit of a splitter, I'd be aiming hard at Cornell with a fat scholarship.

Thanks guys, I did not know that. I will re-evaluate my choices later.
