WAITLISTED: Additional Info

Post by gold42 » Sat May 31, 2014 3:37 am

I've been waitlisted at my top choice. Thoughts on how much additional material I should send?

I started and maintained two part-time jobs since sending in my application, so in addition to a LOCI and updated résumé, I was considering sending LORs from both of my new employers.

Would sending in two be too much additional information or since this is for my top choice, should I swing for the fences and show them I really want to be there?

Hope everyone is on their way to making their final decisions!

Thanks for the help!

It really depends on which school is your top choice. Each school has a different attitude towards receiving information from waitlisters.
Some take the "less is more" approach, others explicitly state which information they require from you. Read the waitlist letter again, as well as threads from previous years' waitlist applicants for that school.

I'm not sure exactly steps you have taken so far, but remember quality over quantity. You need to demonstrate that you are willing to go there period. Second, review your application and review why you think you were waitlisted in the first place (i.e. numbers, yield protect, lack of commitment, or etc), and address that weakness.

Only give them those extra letters if you think it's a strong recommendation and complements the rest of your letters. Once again, read those dean interviews and see what type of letters the school likes seeing (i.e. from professors or from employers).

What sort of part-time jobs are we talking about?

@bloomingtea: Thanks for the insight! This school actually didn't ask for anything, but I emailed admissions and they said feel free to send new materials (did not specify) via email. I haven't sent anything yet since sending my initial application (Statement of Purpose, required supplemental essay, 3 LoRs, résumé). So I would be sending a LOCI, 2 ADDITIONAL LoRs and an updated résumé.

@PDX4343: First job was an assistant position at a talent agency (I covered four agents). In addition to the admin work and interacting with clients/producers/casting directors. I oversaw weekly contract signings with new clients, reviewed and prepared the contracts before sending them to SAG.

The other job was a digital marketing assistant for a creative agency that has several celebrity, athlete, brand and company clients. I essentially helped manage different accounts.

Ok yeah if I were in your shoes I would probably just mention what you've been doing in a LOCI and try to tie it into how it's helping you prepare for law school. I was just going to say if you were doing something like working at starbucks I wouldn't mention it. What you're doing sounds nice enoughto mention, hopefully it will push you over the edge.

@PDX4343 Thanks. To be clear, is that a no on the LORs or do you think I could I benefit from sending them? (Note: I know they are going to be very strong and positive LORs.)

The way I look at it (and if you oppose this idea, that's great – that's why I'm posting here), their waitlist is unranked and it's my #1 choice. Wouldn't it be to my benefit to put the extra effort in beyond a simple 1 page LOCI so they can see there is no question they are the institution I want to attend?

Thanks for your help!

Honestly sending in another 2 LOR's at this point seems like a bit of overkill to me. Then again, I've never been in this situation before, and you can't argue with the results that bloomingtea has gotten, so i'll defer to his advice. If you think the new LOR's will compliment your application then send them, but don't send them just to send them.
