how to use LOR to "complete" my application?

Post by cavalier2015 » Thu May 29, 2014 12:21 pm

first, i want to thank everyone on this forum for being so helpful with the application process. I am studying for the september LSAT but I wish to get my LOR figured out over summer so I can apply to schools by halloween. i currently have a 3.41-3.42 (from a t-25 undergrad) and am aiming to get higher 170s. Of course, I actually need to get that score but that's a whole another issue. as for LOR, I have the following scenario that I want to run by y'all and see if it's a good strategy.

i am planning on asking my foreign language teacher (101 level) for one of my LOR. I received a B in her class (i had to miss time for medical reasons and subsequently it was difficult to catch up on). although i got a B in her class, me and her are very close together. in fact, i should have deserved a D or C- but she managed to extend every possible deadline so that I could get a higher grade. she knows me very well as a person and a student and says she has nothing but positive things to say. i already emailed her asking for a rec and letting her know that a good rec is generally 2 pages long and detailed and glowing and asking if she could do it. she said she would love to and told me to send her an email in the near future with my resume, PS, additional essays/addendum, and a list of things I want her to include in the rec. she would then write it and then run it by me and she would hear my thoughts and incorporate them or edit the rec more until we were both satisfied. since this was a foreign language class, i kind of want her letter of rec to highlight my willingness to learn, my ability to grasp things, my curiosity, my participation in class (small class, about 12 students), my ability to work with others and learn from them and teach them, and how even facing adversity I can overcome it.

i then plan to ask one of my history professors for a letter of rec highlighting my writing ability.

i then plan to ask one of the professors I did research with over a few summers in a foreign country (science related because i was premed at the time/ yeah fuck me right?) to comment on my research skills and my curiosity to learn.

do you guys feel that these 3 recs together can be good? i was hoping to show all sides of me that would be critical as a law school student. would AdComs question why someone who gave me a B is writing a glowing letter of rec? and why a professor of science is writing a letter of rec for a liberal arts major?

Your list of recommenders seems fine to me, assuming that they'll write glowing reviews of you. I think the lowest acceptable grade you should have in their classes is a B (I received a B+ from one of my recommenders).

I had similar questions when I was applying this cycle, and people told me that I should ask for LORs from individuals who really knew me, had an idea of who I am, and would write positive things rather than instructors whose classes I got good grades in but did not stand out from the crowd.
