LSAT GPA re: College Credit for High School Classes

Post by victory » Tue May 20, 2014 11:04 pm

Hey everyone, I'm graduating high school next week and plan to attend . this fall.
(Disclaimer: I know your immediate reaction to this statement will be along the lines of "Go away, wait three years, repost," but before that, I have a specific question to ask that's different than most other hs students in this section.)

In hs I took AP classes. While going through the LSAC's GPA recalculation policy, I found that they require community college transcripts and take into consideration grades from community colleges. That doesn't apply to me, but then I saw this:
[We request transcripts from] institutions from which you took college-level courses while in high school even though they were for high school credit
.

Does this mean that my grades in my AP classes, if used for college credit, will count towards my LSAC GPA? While it sounds silly to even ask, I'm a tad curious as to whether these high school classes will count towards my LSAC GPA, recognizing that I'll receive college credit for them.

Any input would be appreciated.

You're gunning way too hard right now.

I believe that the quoted LSAC statement refers only to classes taken, for example, at a community college. You do not receive credit for any AP class; you receive credit based on the exam, which is taken independently of the high school course.

Your grades from AP classes are not calculated into your LSAC GPA. Any classes you took through a community college or university that you also received high school credit for do count (an example is my school let seniors who were ahead enough in math take Calc III through a university and gave them a high school grade).

Something that may be relevant to you if you plan on graduating early though is that LSAC requires 60 graded credits to calculate an LSAC GPA.

Also, don't ruin your college experience gunning for law school. College is a unique life experience and you should savor it while it lasts. Graduating early will help your admissions only if you take several years off in worthwhile work experience. And don't base your college choices on going to law school, as you and the legal market may change dramatically between now and graduation.

For law school, focus on getting good grades, making lasting memories, and working/interning/volunteering in the community.

I agree with this, but be an adult about college. I'm not saying don't party and have fun, but don't go into massive debt dragging it out just so you can play more beer pong. Just temper your "college is the most magical time of my life!" thoughts with pragmatism, basically. Also, don't take the LSAT until you're ready to take the LSAT, and plan to work for a year or two before law school.
