Social Media Presence

Post by jkhalfa » Tue May 20, 2014 9:00 pm

I have no social media presence whatsoever. I have a unique name, but when you google it you only get a couple random mentions (nothing bad). No Facebook or Twitter (anymore), no Instagram, no LinkedIn, no whatever.

I know adcoms and employers often google applicants, so could a complete lack of social media be harmful? Should I revive Facebook or start a LinkedIn just so I don't look like an antisocial Luddite? Or will no one care?

(1) No, it doesn't matter for adcomms.
(2) You are an anti-social luddite as evidenced by (a) not having facebook (b) caring enough to ask this
(3) Like 90%+ of lawyers & law students have LinkedIn. You will need to get it eventually. It's free. Just fucking sign up.
(4) Just fucking sign up for FB.

It seems like LinkedIn probably is required. I'm just not a huge fan of social media I guess. Like I said, I had a Facebook and Twitter, but I deactivated them because they were addictive wastes of time.

Actually, it might not be such a bad thing, considering how many people get into trouble because of stupid things they say/put up on social media.

If you're getting in trouble with an adcomm because of social media, you're just careless or moronic. Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram all have great privacy controls. Sometimes you have to be paranoid about it. Personally, I only allow friends to see content and I prohibit them from posting on my wall or tagging me in pictures without my consent. I have multiple user lists and post content specifically to these lists (sometimes the content is even contradictory).

Not having social media is odd in today's world. Have it, but use it carefully and intelligently. Honestly, it's easier to self-moderate than forums, where you can't delete content and edits are displayed.

That's what I was worried about. I've managed to delete or hide everything on my old Facebook (I started it when I was like 16, so I'm sure there was a ton of embarrassing shit on there), so I might just reactivate that. That way I'll have a locked-down account with a few hundred friends that looks basically normal without having to rebuild one from scratch.
