Mid/lower T14 Waitlist Movement Thoughts

Post by Hahalollawl » Mon May 05, 2014 6:59 pm

Hey all,
So it seems like quite a few TLSers (including myself) are on a bunch of waitlists at T14 schools. I'm wondering what people's thoughts are on what to expect in terms of movement on these waitlists, especially for the mid/lower T14 schools. The impression I had was that a lot of schools were, for whatever reason, not expecting to pull heavily from their waitlists (perhaps over enrolled?). So my expectations are not particularly high for these waitlists.

I'm not sure where I got this impression but I recently read an article (http://spiveyconsulting.com/blog/the-su ... f-melting/) that seemed to make sense and suggested there might be reason to expect movement on T14 waitlists, especially from 7-14.

Do you think fewer applicants applied to more schools? What are your impressions of how waitlist movement might shape up this summer? Would it be foolish for those of us on these waitlists to get our hopes up only to be crushed? When might we know if this is the case? I'm curious to find out what others think! Also, it'd be cool to get the opinions of previously accepted waitlisters as well! :)

Please feel free to share your thoughts!

If, in fact, fewer applicants applied to more schools, then there should definitely be some robust WL movement. If LS admissions is anything like grad admissions, some schools are just going to be better than others in any given year at predicting their yield. Even with the larger sample sizes, it's not always easy to anticipate trends.

I dont see as much WL activity as last year since everyone lowered their standards this year based on the new medians and it appears that apps have stabilized at t-14 schools. Top 20,30 will probably be ok too. From t50 I suspect schools will have to drop medians by about to two to maintain same class size if even that.

UVA keeps emailing me to say they expect little, if any, WL movement. Not sure if this is for real or just a roundabout way of discouraging WL admits from asking for scholarship money.

I have received a similar message from Georgetown. I also heard that Duke's class is pretty full, too. I do wonder if the changing dynamics of law school applicants caused some of the T-14's to admit a larger percentage of applicants, rather than waitlist them, and then waitlist candidates that they may have otherwise rejected, in an effort to really try to hold up their class sizes.

Yes everyone school has new medians starting class of 2016 meaning that they were accepting people they were rejecting/waitlisting in the past and since it appears that apps to t/14 and possibly t20 have stayed about the same there won't be as much waitlist movemenst as last year. Unless of course some school decides to lower them even further for revenue..

I do think that the above assumes that schools are reallyreally good at predicting their yields, and that previous yp rates are predictive for this cycle. Given that people are applying more broadly than ever and that negotiations & scholarship data are more public than ever, I do think there's some reason for optimism...

Most first deposit deadlines have passed already right? So I suppose an interesting question to ask would be, do a lot of people deposit at multiple schools? Or, if there is any movement, will it be caused by higher ranked schools pulling from waitlists and taking people who already deposited at lower ranked schools?

Does anyone know when historically the most waitlist movement has happened (May? June maybe? Even later?)?

Congrats. :) I'm not on Georgetown's waitlist personally, but it seems like they have started pulling and have let people know that they expect to let them know more by June 6. Also interestingly, it seems like perhaps Georgetown has sent different emails to different people depending on how likely they think it is that the recipient will be accepted. Kind of interesting that they have given that kind of indication. I don't think any of the waitlists I'm on have given that kind of indication, at least not so far.

Anyone notice reverse splitters got admitted to Penn and UVA lately? Maybe there is demand for reverse splitters...

If tls had a tangible impact it would be increasing splitters IMO making that less valuable
