Late Application

Post by J3987 » Mon Apr 07, 2014 8:02 pm

Hi all,

I graduated from college in 2013 and have been working in finance for about 10 months (buyside/hedge fund analyst). I have learned a lot, passed the CFA level 1, substantial work experience, etc etc. but I am not happy with the job and am considering leaving. So my question is, is it far too late to send an application to a T14 school? I know that the official deadlines have passed, but will my application still be considered at all if I applied at this stage?

I took the LSAT in my junior year, got a 173. My GPA is pretty good, but not great. Could I throw in an app to NYU/Columbia/Duke and have a shot?

It's probably too late in the cycle. Only checked NYU for you, but their application deadline has passed already... http://www.law.nyu.edu/jdadmissions/app ... plications

This seems ridiculously late in the cycle to apply to a top school without a very good reason. A whim is a very poor reason to apply to law school. You're much better off waiting until next cycle, in my opinion.

Yes way too late - with a 173 you should be able to garner 150k from Binding ED at Northwestern if you have at least a 3.5x GPA.

I would like to snag an offer for Fall 2014 admission. You guys seem to be suggesting that it would be easier to get in if applied early in the 2015 cycle (and I agree with you on that point). However, is it really unprecedented to gain admission this late? I am sure schools have to deal with drop-outs, lower-than-expected matriculation, etc. during the spring/summer before the class meets in the fall. And, if my qualifications are better than the next guy on the wait list, why would they not consider my application?

What I am essentially asking is have late applications been successful in the past?

Late apps see a lot of waitlists, and more importantly, a lot less money. Also, while you have decent stats, you don't have amazing stats. You could end up attending a school far worse than you could have gotten in, and at sticker.

In fact, here is someone who sent in apps in February/April. 173/3.57. She had a pretty shitty cycle:

Here she is again, applying in September of this year, same stats:

HTH.

ETA: Also, of course schools deal with less-than-expected matriculation. That is what the waitlist is for.

Thanks scoobers, that is very helpful.

Also, I addressed the waitlist point haha.

^schools YP. I can name someone on pretty much every T14 waitlist with better stats than you.

Sure, but I would imagine that someone with better stats AND who has not accepted an offer elsewhere by April/May is far less common. Unless they had a singularly unlucky cycle.

Regardless, you made a good point and backed it up with a convincing piece of evidence (albeit anecdotal). Much appreciated.

It's certainly possible to apply this late and still get in. A few years ago there was there was a blog post about how several T14s were still willing to take applications in July or something like that. You can do better by applying early next cycle though.
