Is there any common wisdom on negotiating an extension for the deposit deadline?

Just be polite, and state the reasons why. Such as personal problems, family matters, financial obligations etc.

I've had very good results by mentioning a desire to visit, but obviously that only works if you are actually planing on visiting. Plenty of other valid reasons (such as those mentioned above) as well.
