Scholarship Negotiation Timeline

Post by theycallmefoes » Thu Mar 20, 2014 10:59 am

How much time after receiving a scholarship offer do I have for negotiating?

I've already chosen a law school and should receive my scholarship package for that school any day now. I've received some scholarships at a few other schools, but there are still several schools from which I'm expecting decent money but haven't received the offers yet. If I want to negotiate my scholarship is my top choice, would it be better to do so before the seat deposit deadline using the few offers I already have, or can I wait until my other (potentially better) offers come in and negotiate after having paid my seat deposit?

Does before vs. after seat deposit make a difference in the amount of leverage I have? Have any of you successfully negotiated a scholarship increase after having already paid your seat deposit?

Thanks for the input. :) If I send a letter requesting a scholarship increase, but then later receive a substantial offer from a peer school, can I send a revised letter?

Interested in this as well. From all that I have read here I haven't seen any info about successfully negotiating after paying seat deposit.

Sent in 5 requests on Sunday night (months after receiving admission/scholly) and on Monday 3 were denied. They weren't really top choices for me but I wanted better offers for leverage. I've read that time is your friend on this issue, but I can see an argument for beginning negotiations ASAP and one for waiting as long as possible.

I've seen a few successful negotiations after deposit, but not at top schools. More like T2s that had a bunch of $$ free up after several students w/ full rides didn't deposit, so they had plenty of money to throw around. I don't know how it works in the T14.
