worst law school advice youve heard?
someone told me today to goto a school over another because they had really good pro bono opportunities.
and ive heard many times the USNWR rankings should be the deciding factor
god bless TLS for removing the veil before it was too late

Thanks bro, that was a solid 20 mins of entertainment. I kept seeing that thread getting bigger and thinking, "fuck that shitty DC school has some followers on this site".sublime wrote:http://top-law-schools.com/forums/viewt ... 8&t=226272

Re: worst law school advice youve heard?
David Boies came to my undergrad once for a dinner/lecture, and I overheard him giving a student advice about law school.
"Oh, you're from California? Well you know if you're thinking about law school, UC Davis is a great school."
At this point I was like
, because Davis is pretty damned expensive even if you qualify for in-state, and there are at least four other schools in California that cost about as much, have much better job opportunities, and typically offer more merit aid.
Also, I don't think Boies's firm has ever hired anyone from UC-Davis.

"Just go to the school that gives you the most money."
This often makes sense if someone is just deciding between peer schools, but this person seriously suggested that full-tuition at Thomas Jefferson > sticker at Harvard. They were unsurprisingly a boomer convinced that every lawyer makes $$$$$.

LSAT related, my UG pre-law advisor told me that if you guess incorrectly it counts against you two times, whereas a blank response is only one time.
LS related, this same person told me that a regional school had 100% employment. (Not even close)
I met with her once.
My UG had no pre-law program at all and this person was just a liberal arts advisor who gave advice to aspiring LS students for a title and extra money.

Yeah, I've gotten similar advice from boomer lawyers. It's cool that one of my mentors went to an unaccredited TTTTT and ended up in-house at a hedge fund in Manhattan, but I'm not going to follow his advice to get into any law school I can and work my way to the top of the class.PDaddy wrote:Cosign: "Why do you need to go to one of those "Ivy League" (i.e. T14) schools? Also worth noting that he nearly fell out of his chair when I told him that tuition was in the six-figures nowadays.

Pre-law advisors suck. One of my students quit her LSAT prep after her pre-law advisor convinced her to attend NYLS.Nonconsecutive wrote:LSAT related, my UG pre-law advisor told me that if you guess incorrectly it counts against you two times, whereas a blank response is only one time.

Of course, the advisor happened to also be an adjunct at NYLS.

Believe me, the fact that my dad went to a TTTT (like not even ranked) and is now a judge does not help...Max324 wrote:Yeah, I've gotten similar advice from boomer lawyers. Basically this. People think that once you rate the exalted title of "lawyer", you're automatically issued your BMW, tailored Italian suit, and fat paycheck. I think it's mostly people who think that getting into law school at all is really difficult, so just being there means you're an intelligent, driven individual. They haven't realized that there are plenty of schools that will take any non-felon who can fill out a FAFSA.hichvichwoh wrote:"it doesn't matter what law school you go to, because you all take the same bar exam"

Re: worst law school advice youve heard?
I've heard advice that is almost criminal, from admissions officers.
For example "oh you took the LSAT with accommodations, we bump 4 points off of your score because of that"

Re: worst law school advice youve heard?
I once had a prelaw advisor tell me that 2 LORs is enough and any more than that is "overkill" and would make me look bad. He basically said adcomms would look at someone with 3-4 LORs and say "This kid is trying way too hard" and reject.
I also have a lot of well-meaning friends who, when I tell them I'm applying to law school, tell me "Oh XYZ University has a great law school!" which really just means "I've heard of XYZ University's law school" and the school's stats are usually terrible. In those situations I usually just nod and say "Yeah I'll definitely do some research on them!"
