TL;DR: PTing in high 160s. Scored 158 & 159 on real exams

will schools look back at the fact i applied this cycle and look down upon it?

Do the prospects look better for the next cycle as in less applicants again?

Definitely retake. You can get some decent work experience in the meantime as well.

Yup, would definitely recommend a retake. You're GPA is pretty good and if you can score where you're prepping or even higher, you will be set.
