Stupid LOCI... Please help

Post by The Dark Kite » Mon Feb 24, 2014 9:57 am

Hey...

So after 3 sleepless nights in a row, I figured I'd just lay it all out and see if anyone had any comforting words or suggestions about a LOCI I sent out to a school.

Basically... I accidentally made myself seem like a total ass. Like a cocky, uncool... idiot. In the rest of my application and in my email correspondences, I've come across as humble so I'm praying that it doesn't get read that way. I also submitted a revised version the next day asking to replace the first but I realized they just keep everything on file (I asked ahead of time and they said it was totally fine to send another letter, so idk).

Anyways. I think I threw myself into the rejection pile after being WL'd and I just feel ridiculous. And dumb. Is there any way around this? I can't contact them because I don't want to be an overly squeaky hinge.. I kinda wanna just lay low for a while... maybe get out of town... find some place to stay/hide from my shame.

I know people who are WL'd often send an additional LOR... maybe if I had a solid recommender help with damage control? Idk.

PLease help.

Can you describe the letter, generally if you want? But what was so abrasive about it?

I was basically like "I'm no gunner... but I'm better than everyone else" and that's a HUGE exaggeration but that's essentially what it came off as... and then I closed by saying something similar to "If given an opportunity, I'll light it up" again, an exaggeration but not super far off from what I sent.

I have NO clue what I was thinking.. it was just.. an impulsive hail mary. I assumed it would be an automatic rejection so I just kinda threw it all out on the line...

And this should be a lesson to everyone (though I think I'm honestly the last to actually learn it): you never know what's going to happen with an application.

I screwed up.

Hey Dark Kite,
I'm sorry you're feeling so badly! But I don't think this is as catastrophic as you're thinking. Here's why:

1. In your post you seem humble and like-able. I suspect that came across in your overall application.

2. It's likely that when your application comes up again, the reviewer is going to look at it as a whole, and that you'll come across as mostly good, particularly if you have a nice essay. And a nice letter right after your somewhat silly one.

3. It sounds like there was some bravado, but no lying, right? I review resumes and cover letters quite a bit in my job, and the ones I really find abrasive are those that obviously exaggerate things to the point of almost lying. Things like: "In my summer internship, I was put in charge of a project worth $14 million." Umm, no.

So take some deep breaths and remember all you have going for you. Then try to put this snafu out of your mind.

You're the greatest person for this. This really actually put me at ease. Thanks so much for your input!

Dude, if coming across like an arrogant ass was an auto-exclusion for law schools, the matric numbers would fall through the floor. Seriously.

Numbers and demographics are super-crucial for WL anyway. Check out Spivey's blog post on the topic.

Trust me man, it's not my numbers they're clinging to lol. And if it's my humility/decency, I'd hate to destroy that perception but it's all good :( . What's done is done!
