+1. i think you actually NEED the addendum, OP. most schools want any "interruption" in education addressed! your explanation is about as out of your own control as it gets, too, so i wouldn't worry about sounding inappropriate!

I don't know what a stop-out semester is, but it sounds like something you might as well explain. The explanation is logical and doesn't show you in a negative light in any way, so it's not going to hurt and it might lessen the confusion of an adcomm.
